First of all, I thank you very much that you have asked such a wonderfull question. Well, this is the same issue which I was thinking about for a very long time. Finally I came with a satisfying answer.
You see, not all human beings in this planet are logical and scientific (especially women, but please don't mind) At the begining stage, when humans all over the world started to live together in a society or with each other, they got this emotional feeling in them.
Back in those days, people did not knew the reasons of all what happens infront of our very eyes. They did not know why the river flows or what or why does the sun rise and set, where do all the stars come from and most of all, why there is so much differences among us, like color, body, sex. They were also curious of different creatures around them.
The problem was, they did not know WHY did they exist or WHERE did they all come fro, and finally WHERE do they goi when they get destroyed. The most important question in their minds was, WHY does all this happen????
To free themselves from these confusions and headaches, they thought the idea of GOD, which according to them creates, controlls and as well as destroys everything which exist in time and space.
In course of time, different people in different parts of the world made images and figures of God. Some people established God-men or God-people or Mahatma's and Gurus. The rest believed that God is an unseen power in the entire cosmos which can be pleased if given sacrifices and offerings.
In short, the reason we created God, is because we i.e. humans did not and do not know the answers to the questions: WHAT, WHY, WHERE, WHEN & HOW of all that takes place of which we see, hear and feel.

Man did indeed create god in his image, not the other way around. Why did man create god? Two reasons: First as a means to explain the events of the nature world. And second as a means of control over other people. It is as simple as that.

Throughout the world religions have often been used to explain things that happen around the world. People living around volcanoes talked about the god of the volcano being angry with them when the volcano would erupt. They didn't know the science behind why a volcano would erupt, so they figured their was a god who was upset with something they were doing and was punishing them.

I pretty much always look at the creation of religions as people not understanding science.

Well, I think the concept of God is a very old concept which started as a way to explain the world around us in a time where we did not have answers so such things as where the moon came from and why it was there, why the wind would blow, and the purpose of our lives in general. Today, a lot of people use the concept of God to help them feel powerful and in control in a world that seems chaotic and complicated. Also, I feel that many use religion, rather than just a belief in God, to give their live meaning as they can not find meaning for themselves; to make the concept of death easier to deal with. Perhaps, if you are very interested in this topic you should take a philosophy of religion class at a local university.

Why did I create you? Existentially, you are a figment of my imagination!
Come now, aren't we assuming an answer to quite a few unanswerable questions?
We didn't.
We didn't because had we it would spoil our fun. Our fun was already spoiled by other agencies.
We didn't because the universe is too big and complicated for random chance to answer for all of it. A very small change in any of billions of tiny facts from electrons to the fact that there is a Moon and no large unstable star anywhere nearby and we wouldn't exist. And why develop a big brain anyhow? Chimps have gotten along quite well without it.
We didn't because Jesus Christ didn't rise from the dead by himself, and without God there would be no meaning in living.
We didn't because I believe in Him.

It is man's nature that he is lost and alone and misguided without another being of superiority, one that he can respect and look up to. We all need someone to follow, someone to look up to, someone to be guided and lead and encouraged by all throughout each of our lives. That is why we have idols; that is why we have God. That is why we have religion; without deities and gods, the world of today would be in utter chaos and would be a barren wasteland of death and destruction. But we have appointed leaders for ourselves to that we may follow them and believe in them so that we don't feel lost and alone. Basically, religion is humanity's indirect way of admitting to themselves that they are helpless and vulnerable without leadership. Religion, gods and deities are also the embodiment of all of our hopes and dreams and wishes. What amuses me the most is the fact that God and all other deities and idols and religions have their teachings and fables and morals and ways of life. But if we created all these idols and dieties and gods and religions, aren't we telling ourselves our own words? Aren't we simply recycling our own teachings and ways of life? Through man's mouth alone, a word may be as insignificant as an ant on the plains. But if you channel your word through a god that many others follow, it becomes known fact and a Word of God, and everyone of that religion loves and believes and follows your word. That is why we created idols and God. Do you understand my meaning?

To control the masses.

There is a long history of political leaders -- like the Greek Kings, Roman Caesars, Moses and the Japanese Emperors -- invoking the power of God to get the people to do as they command.

To explain the unexplained.

He's becoming pretty useless as we explain more and more about our lives, our world, the universe.

His word is used to control the masses of uneducated, ignorant and fearful people who need guidance from an imaginary figure. If you can't think for yourself, pick up a deity. That should solve all your problems.
