the only OTC medication that is safe for dogs is Robitussin. Call your vet for exact dosage. Good Luck

I'm sure the emergency vet in your area has Gizmo's medication. They won't refill it without seeing him, but to try to substitute an over the counter medication is dangerous! He's 16 years old. Is he on any other medications? Do you know for sure if giving him something over the counter might not be safe with those other meds? It might cost you a little more money, but at least it won't cost him his life!

I might sound a little riled up, but I have seen people try to treat their animals with some human medications, and the results are tragic. Some meds may be fine to give to animals, but it's always good to speak with a vet before you give anything. At least call the emergency vet and tell them why he is taking the cough med and if he's on any other meds. They can best let you know if there is something to give safely at home.

NO. What is he been getting for the cough????? He probably has heart problems that are causing the cough. Never give a dog that age over the counter medication without cheaking with you vet first!!!

I had a dog with a cough, and i called the vet and they told me to give him robitussin, Just make sure you give him the right dose for his weight.

What is causing Gizmo's cough?

I don't know if this will work for him, but it works for me and is harmless in any case: Try mist or steam, such as what you get from a hot bath.

Good luck!

just get some childrens syrup and give him a few ml like you do his regular. It is just like when you have to give him benadryl or pepto for alergies and up set stomach.
