Which is better in terms of playback, recording capability?

There is essentially no difference in compatibility any more, and there never was much anyway. Both have the same recording capacity. There may be minor differences in the operation of the recorders for DVD video. Both types of media are readily available, and there isn't any price difference. For best results, use only good quality media and avoid the highest speeds when recording. For computer drives, you can get some that can record either format. All new DVD players are designed to play both types.

Neither has any advantage over the other one, just two different formats that are not compatible with one another.

DVD-R is compatible with more players.But they are pretty much the same.
