people dont' understand the 95% of the worlds population has the "epstein barr" virus that harbors in the spinal fluid.

this is the same family of viruses of the herpies virus (along with several others like yellow and dengue fevers, hcv ect)

shingles occur from many reasons...surgery, viruses reactivated, stress....

Shingles is the result of previous infection with herpes zoster the virus that causes chicken pox. It remains dormant in the nervous system for years and then tends to appear years later when an individual is stressed. However, not every stressed individual gets this or I would have a nasty case of it right now cause i am really really stressed about work right now. I do think it is also related to the health of the immune system so anything that boosts the immune system will help with this problem. HIV is a horrible disease but one of the side effects is that a lot of research into viral infections has taken place at a more rapid scale and doctors now have more antiviral drugs and treatments at their disposal to help with illnesses like shingles. (i'm always looking for the positive).

In some parts of the country, shingles are a preferred look for a house, especially a Cape Cod or an Arts-and-Crafts. You don't need to have low immunity in order to get shingles - just call a contractor or stop in a Lowe's or other supply store.

When my son had shingles. the doctor told us that the virus that caused chicknpox when he was a child remained in his body and then resurfaced as shingles when he was a teenager.
I do not think a low immune system has anything to do with it as most people get rid of the virus when th chickenpox is healed,
My son had chickenpox at the age of 2 weeks and that may have had something to do with him getting shingles.

shingles is caused by the herpes virus - HSV 3, the same virus that causes chicken pox. one can never get rid of the virus as it is a latent type of virus that stays dormant in the lumbosacral area of the bone marrow. it is reactivated by stressful stimuli like UV radiation, sunburn, emotional stress. this is however evident in people whose immune system is compromised by steroids or HIV or just stress due to too much cortisol.

thus, if you had chicken pox and the virus is reactivated, you can get shingles.

it is treated by antiviral drugs, but can never be cured.
