For the same reason that this question was put in the "Korea" category -- ignorance.

I would expect that it isn't ignorance as some people here seem to think that lead you to put this question here. You probably work in Korea, possibly as an English teacher. This would mean your students seem to be confused as to the fact that Africa is a continent not a country. This would be because they really don't study that much about other countries here in the early grades. My students actually know just as little about Canada, where I am from. What is the only thing that they study about Canada in social studies. Our lowest point in the past few decades the referendum in Quebec as to whether Quebec would leave Canada or not. With all the other things they have to study it is no wonder they know so little about the world around them.

I think Ignorance says it best. People don't understand that there are countries inside of Africa (like Tanzania, South Africa, etc). Africa is a Continent.
It's sad that people don't know this. Even my 6th graders understand that Africa is not a country.

I think you'd be better off putting this question in the Africa section!

Couple of reasons in my opinion
1. news media always refers to anything happening on that continent as Africa like it is only one big country
2. People are stupid.

Some people are seriously ignorant. It's a wonder how they manage to make a living and get by in this world.

Stupidity, lack of knowledge, don't care.....
Maybe, because as a continent it's small. Like Australia, which is also thought of as a country.
