If Britain wants to become sour, bitter, self-righteous, and sanctimonious like Old Europe (meaning Germany and France), then sure.
Love, Jack.

That's not exactly true Donna !
It only refer's to unemployment benefit and varies from country to country within Europe.
Personally I think they should apply the ' non habitual resident ' law to all new arrival's - brought in , in the eighties to stop freeloading American's ( 90.000 a year at the time ) taking advantage and getting free medical treatment on our N.H.S. whilst visiting relatives and still saving a fortune; The law mean's that anyone not having lived here for a minimum of 6 month's cannot get any benefit's or use our free N.H.S. It stopped the abuse of our system but they don't enforce it across the board ?
To me, this is existing law and would stop anyone comming here with the intention of not working for a living and freeloading like Abu Hamsa and his family did.
I believe that if they had to wait 6 month's the shirker's would go elsewhere but the real worker's - like the Polish - would still come;
It would sort the wheat from the chaff and the legislation is already in place but every time I ask an MP this,they just look confused and ignore me.

In answer to your headline question, "no". Britain should be like Britain. We have managed for over a thousand years and are very successful, or at least we were until this government got in, now we are going down hill. But ironically, it is largely because of Europe, so I hardly think that we should be more like Europe.

social programmes are good but some people take advantage of them. most are designed to help people in need. I think you have to look at the reason the person is unable to work. if its due to injury then it depends on how long it will take to recover, etc

I am not aware of any other country that effectively invites immigrants (legal OR illegal) to come here, then pays them for doing so - AHEAD of our own people.
However, it is quite a different story for people coming here legally as wives or husbands of British people - they have to provide endless paperwork, face abusive interviews and pay exhorbitant fees. And STILL they are denied access to public funds and, for a period, even access to work.

I'd go along with that, then perhaps all those illegal immigrants who come here to live off the fat of the land will find another country stupid enough to take them in.

Why should you get anything anyway. Work or get nothing is my motto.
