It is really hard to say what it was like in a few paragraphs. Evaluate what you want to get out of the experience and what sort of training you want. The Army can be the best or worst job you ever had. I know guys who joined and took advantage of everything the Army had to offer and now they are flying Apaches. Some guys ***** and moan the whole time and end up getting nothing out of the experience and end up getting out after wasting a few years of their lives. Try not to listen to the guys who were in other services trying to pull you into their service. Joining the military is a very personal decision that cannot be made by other people for you. You will have some of the best days ever and the worst. You will meet the best people on earth and the worst sort. I advise you to get back on this question board and ask more targeted questions about what you want to do and where you want to go.....ex. "how hard is Ranger school?" "can I get stationed in Hawaii?" etc.

It will be nothing like you have even experienced before. Hard work, life long friends, long hours, life long skills. You'll be pushed well beyond what you ever thought you were capable of doing, physical and mental. Is it an easy life? Not all the time, but it does have it's moments. And I challenge the naysayers to tell be a better feeling then knowing you have served your country. Besides, anyone can sell shoes,or cars .

And to TBL...dude, you stay out of the Army, you would be crying to go home after the first week. And most of you questions seem to center on wanting free Musial and electronic stuff for what ever small time band you are in; probably at the local bowling alley. That's fine if that is all you want it life. And talk about the military being corrupt....maybe you ought to re-think all the sneaky lying crap that goes in the wonderful world of music.

Back when I was in, basic training is 8 weeks. After that you go through 8 more weeks in the Military Occupational Specialty (MOS) you chose,, or the army chose for you. Beware, just because you are trained in a certain MOS, this doesn't mean you will be actually working in this MOS. The needs of the army are priority one. For example. If you are trainied as an office clerk, and the army needed a bunch of dogface grunts when you finished Advanced Individual Training (AIT), guess what your new MOS is, 11B10, infantryman.

Basic training is no piece of cake, especially in the summer time, nor the wintertime, depending on where they send you. It takes it's toll on you physically. Ait is about the same. After AIT, when you get assigned to your military job, life gets a lot easier, except if you are in one of the combat MOS's.

This is basically what you are facing if your join the army. I hope that this description of what is to come, doesn't deter you from joining, if that is what you want.

I'm in the RAF and I've worked with the army before. I'd say join the Air Force or navy. The army are treated like children if they're a junior rank, and so begin to act like children. I stayed with some infantry guys on the fire strikes and their favourite pastime was to watch WWF wrestling and to play out the moves against eachother. They were aged between 20 and 25 and were enjoying wrestling! Some of them even said that they thought it was real! They also get beasted (shouted at) a lot. In the Navy and Air Force, you get treated like adults. you learn a trade and go to the better world locations (generally).

If you're going to join the military, try the Air Force or Navy first.

The army is different for everyone. It all depends on your abiltiy to cope with different situations and people. It can be good and it can be really bad. I've been in for 6 and have had a real good run however the army just isn't for me. My friend on the other hand has reenlisted. It is good for benefits but as I said it also depends on your chain of command and unit. For a more detailed answer give a more precise question on exactly what you want to know.

I'm in the Navy, but right now I'm on a joint task force with the Army, and I would never join the Army after this experience. I'm pretty senior in the Navy, but get treated like I am very junior here. Personally, if someone is thinking of joining the military, I think you'll find more rewarding opportunities in the Navy...

I was in the navy for 6 years. I was stationed around the army and honestly it is not worth joining. If you had to join a military branch either do the Air Force because they are spoiled and lazy or do the Marines because they can teach you to be a man. If you like the water come join the Navy. Please take my advice, don't ask a recruiter because they will tell you what you want to hear and not what you need to hear. Ask someone who has been in the military and has experienced it.

I did the reserves. Full time and reserves are alot different. As for basic training goes when you are there you are sleep deprived, stressed but in the best physical shape you'll probably ever be in. While you are there it sucks 75% of the time. When I look back at it though I am happy I did the training and it was an experience of a life time. As for weekend drills (possibly just my unit) Boring as all hell. Get there at 7am sit around do nothing till lunch then wait to go home. Possibly 5 months out of the year you actually do something exciting (BRM, Fighting op4, AT)

I like being in the army. I think its fun. I have met some of the best people in my life while in the army. They make you physically strong and teach you important job skills and leadership that you can use when you get out. Its not as bad as you would think. People who usually complain about the army either haven't been in it, or couldn't cut it.
