There are many different possibilities. The first one is a food allergy. The second is an environmental allergy (allergic to your fabric softener or high pollen counts). The third is stress. The fourth is an infestation that you can't see. There are others as well, but these are the most common.
Simply 'checking' her food won't do a darn thing. You need to bring her to the vet to have her diagnosed. He'll then recommend several courses of action depending on the outcome. If he thinks it could be a food allergy, don't let him sell you a bunch of expensive allergy tests. You can find food allergy testing diets easily on the internet. You can also try simply switching her to a higher quality food. Something like Natural Balance (NOT Nutro, Natural Recipe, Nature's Recipe, etc), wellness, and a few others sold at natural pet fod stores. I'll link to a few examples. What you want to look for is is a single protein source and no corn or wheat.
If it's stress, try playing with her more. If she's being left alone during the day, then you should consider doggie day care or paying someone to come in and visit her in the afternoon. A local high school child would be perfect. Pay her $5 a day to come in and play with her, maybe take her for a walk, let her out to go potty, etc. Dogs are known for being self-destructive if there are emotional issues.
A vet visit is crucial. Don't self medicate or attempt to figure out & treat the problem on your own until you've spoken to your vet. Call your vet on monday to get in when you can. It's nothing that you have to rush her in, but the sooner, the better. Good luck to you! : )

If your dog is having an allergic reaction then you should go to the vets. Dawn soap works great for killing fleas so a good bath with that several times a month is my suggestion. Vaccume alot and see if your vet can give you a different type of flea medicine that your dog wont react too.

I think the combination of dry skin and allergic sensitivity is probably the cause, particularly if your dog is a terrier or has terrier ancestry. We have terriers and know plenty of other people with terriers, and this is the main problem these dogs have. They have improved a lot now that they get bathed with a special, mild shampoo with colloidal oatmeal and are on a diet of dry dogfood made from all meat - no grains or legumes.

A trip to the vet definitely is in order. She could have allergies, low thyroid, mites, any number of things...most of which are fairly easy and inexpensive to remedy.
Meanwhile, giving her a bath with oatmeal shampoo for dogs, or even just adding a generous handfull of rolled oats to normal dog shampoo, will help soothe the itching.

She could have allergies or possibly dry skin. Dogs can have allergies to just about anything, from food to dust. My pit bull is allergic to everything and has very sensitive. He will get breakouts from his flea medication, and has to have special shampoos. We even had to switch our laundry soap because he was having break outs from that. If she has been exposed to anything new I would try and eliminate that, but it took our dog awhile to have reactions to some of the things in his environment.

my dog always itches during the summer. my vet said to mix 1/2 a cup of white vinegar w/ 2 cups of water and spray her with it twice a day. it kills any bacteria that may cause her to itch. i also put a shirt on her to keep her from getting sores from scratching.

if it's dry skin, then you could try putting some coconut or olive oil in her food( a spoonful) . My mother did this with her two dogs . Otherwise, call the vet's office they can probably give you some recommendations over the phone.

Could be dry skin or allergies. Have the vet check it out. There's special shampoos and medications you can get for her.
