The Air-Land Battle Doctrine emphasizes that the attacking force have a MINIMUM of a 3 to 1 advantage.
With the current deployment of our troops, we could not fight terrorism in Afghanistan and Iraq, and conduct a full scale attack into Iran, unless we call up all reserve units, and activate all the heavy armor.
We would be highly successful in conducting high altitude stealth bomber attacks on Iran's military, government, and nuclear facilities. In addition with our nuclear submarines and fleet we could launch a devastating attack on Iran's infrastructure.
This would crumble Iran's defense forces considerably, and may open the opportunity for the underground movement to destroy the Khomeini dictatorship.
I do not see in the near future any military operation against Iran, unless Iran fires missiles at our soldiers, or at Israel.
However, if we really wanted to, it would be like the first Gulf War, with tactical air, artillery, mechanized infantry, and armor in a blitzkreig tactic which I would honestly say would overrun and destroy the Iranian Coventional Forces.

They would have to begin with a blitz, sorry that was another nazi states method, I meant shock and awe. Then , unless they were prepared to use atomic weapons, they would proceed to get their asses kicked. Iraq had been under sanctions for 10 years and look at the trouble the US is having there.Iran is more than 10 times more powerful than Iraq ever thought of being. A few other questions though, why are you even asking. Iran has every right to have nuclear energy, and if it's weapons you are concerned about, invade Israel, they are the only ones that have them in the region. They are also Iran's worst enemy. Wise up, because of people like you, the rest of the world looks at the USA as we used to look at the USSR. The difference is the USSR was merely sabre rattling, the US is empire building.

Yes,they could...But US will never win...They have created too much chaos in Afghanistan and Iraq, they have to clear that mess first...And I really think that this could take years...Us has started a civil war there and I really don't know how they are going to deal with it...
Iran has a strong army and they are not going down as easy as Afghanistan or Iraq...So,no,in case they attack Iran, this won't end up with limited American casualties...

There would be a lot of casualties. But we're technology based now. I say bombing raids happen within the next 4 months. I have heard some pilots are now being called out the their stations in the Emirates for an extended period. As a nation we could pull it off. The fascists that currently run our government can pull it off as long as the media continue to be their lapdogs. It would probably only take a couple of networks to put out 2 totally different numbers of the body count to create confusion in the masses.
Imbedded reporters scared to be shot by a US military if they write anything critical of our actions would write pulitzer prize winning human interest stories about how Iranian citizen, Abdul Hahdhahdhad, was in the camel sales business 30 years ago until the Iranians ran the US out. Now, he's thinking about getting back that camel dealership. He thanks the American liberators individually next to the big *** tank outside of his house. A true freedom fighter.

I really doubt it, America is very stretched and is calling up reservists already for its current conflicts. The wars are costing the American people trillions of dollars. Quite frankly, I'm surprised Bush hasn't called for national conscription yet (he probably doesn't know how to spell it). If America needs to learn anything, it's that you can't invade other countries and expect the populace to fall over and thank you for being 'rescued' - not everyone wants to follow the (western) democratic model.

Nightrider is correct--Iran is a huge, very wealthy, and proud country.
Because of that, what's on W's desk are probably air campaign options. When the worst president in US history pushes the plunger this time, you will probably see the most colossal load of explosives ever imagined dropped on every conceivable military, as well as industrial, site they can find.
As heartbreaking as the disaster in Iraq has become, the Policy of Preemption this time will make Iraq look like child's play. Hold onto your seats, it's gonna be a rough ride.

Rummy and Condi will advise Dubya with "..let's get the show on the road....". Sadly, if Bush gets in there he is dipping his toes in alligator pond.
Iran is not like Iraq. It is huge. We have burnt our fingers in the past with Iran.
No, Americans will get into deep do-do. Just keep the rhetoric going and keep threatening. No need to go into action. My 2 cents worth advise to Bush anyway. I think it is quite valid too.
See..? he should have hired me as his advisor and fire Rummy.

We could easily defeat the Iranian Army, but the occupation is the harder of the two parts (as witnessed throughout history).
