I've seen this more than once and it really pisses me off. I understand the fasination with a huge fire but to bring out the chairs so you can watch the destruction in leisure is demented. Get an eye full and move on you sick idiots, your fascination does not justify your total lack of consideration.

Jim B has a point, it's on the top of his head. No sale buddy, there's no justifying your bad behavior.

I think that this is a response allied with the thought process "glad it wasn't me". Yes, that's tacky. I only stare visibly if I'm taking over the situation. (If I was the one to call the fire department and have invited them over to my place, for instance. It's happened.) If it's not that, well, there was a really really bad fire in my neighborhood about a year ago, that threatened to spread. Many of us kept our eyes on it (discreetly and indoors) to make sure we'd know if it was coming towards us. The lawn chair thing- that's the mark of someone with zero empathy. If they did have, they'd offer their services, or go away.

I guess it is like praying. People think you have to be on your knees with your hands together and over your head. I have no idea of why they do that. Maybe the prayer shoots out of the tips of their fingers like a Laser beam or something.
So with this house burning thing? What do you think the people should do? Stand there and walk around and say things like dang poor ole George and his family sure did have a bad string of bad luck. Maybe run in the burning house to risk their life's to save the pictures that are hanging on the wall?
I guess you could grab your water hose and run over there and start spraying the fire and bet your butt sued off for water damage. Or maybe even get you blown up by the 5 gallons of lawnmower gas that is setting there. Or maybe you could try to help and let a gas pipe break and burn you to death or explode. There are electric wires that will at some point fall with bare wires and kill you dead by your stream of water hitting it.
I myself will try to help if I can but there is not much I can do. It would be better if I turned on the water hose and set in a lawn chair and watched the show and kept an eye on the sparks and spray them as they land on my home. No need for me to loose my life or home because theirs burnt down.
Do you not think that I would go grab someone and take him or her to my lawn chair and set them down and try to help them till and EMT arrived? Or do you think it is better to peep out the window and close the curtain when someone looks over your way. That is not helpful at all. Go out there and watch what is going on and learn. Wait for your chance to help which may never happen and maybe your best stance will be to watch and help the people who live next door to keep the fire off his house. Hiding in your house is not only stupid but also dangerous.
It has nothing to do with respect on not having any respect it is called surviving.
Well Big Brother if my house is on fire and you are peeping out your window at me I just might flip you off. What a Chicken Sh!t would be my thought. If you are setting in your front lawn with your water hose beside you are standing ready to help. I would respect you a lot more.

People who have no lives...I've seen this too, tho not with lawn chairs. They often watch a building burn if it belongs to someone they don't like. Kind of gleefully watching them get it, you know. Sick, I agree.

The only way to answer your question is: beats me. I am with you, I cannot imagine what is with people who do that. Everyone is curious but STAY IN YOUR HOUSE AND PEEK OUT THE WINDOW for crying out loud. Someone else's tragedy is not a spectator sport.
Well thank you, you got my blood pressure up this morning. Thanks for the burst of energy.
Great question by the way.

I don't understand even wanting to watch, this is real life we are talking about. I think we need to think about what we are doing to these people, while there life goes up in smoke. If a neighbor feels they need to be their for love and support, then they should, but other wise don't stare, it's rude and disrespectful.

That really is pretty sick. Makes you wonder how those people would feel if the situation was reversed. Very, very sad.
