I have friend who had several but I do not understand why and how! Alot of people, including myself, have provided support and he's getting better. But I have limited knowledge on this subject. So, what is a nervous breakdown...but, more importantly, how do people get nervous breakdowns. Why is that? This is what I am seeking for an answer - in plain English please! Not complex terms and explanations - thank you (personal examples are optional!)!

No, you do not have to be a weak person to have a nervous breakdown. You could even see a person who has breakdowns as strong, because a breakdown is how you deal with stuff. The way I see it, a whole load of stresses that you have been unable to deal with gets to you all at once and you can not function normally for a while as you feel so bad. Every nervous breakdown is different, and everyone experiences them differently. To get through it you keep yourself safe and warm and well-fed. Just know you will get through it, cos you will, you just do not know when. Eventually the feelings will get a bit better and you will gradually be able to start doing things again.

If it gets too bad, if you have never had one before or you are not coming out of it, go to your doctor.

There is no real clinical term called "nervous breakdown." I work in mental health and I've never seen a psychiatrist diagnose "nervous breakdown." It may have been a real term at one time, but I have copies of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders dating back to 1952 and it isn't listed in any of those books. If it was a real term, it was before 1952. Currently, it is a slang term for what happens when someone has severe psychiatric problems and is unable to cope with day to day life.

nervous breakdown, also known as a mental breakdown; is a sudden, acute attack of mental illness such as depression or anxiety. Like sanity, the term is not recognized by the psychological community. In part, this is because the term has pejorative connotations, while this phenomenon is a normal and relatively common response to chronic stress. Often, the emerging illness is only described as a "breakdown" when the person becomes unable to function, at which point the disorder is advanced. Often, the supposed breakdown is a manifestation of career burnout.

The psychiatric community rejects the term "nervous breakdown", in part, because it is not descriptive enough of the actual disorder and symptoms. A common diagnosis that follows such an event is brief reactive psychosis.

Firstly, Jack....You sir are WAY OFF! A mental breakdown is nothing to be doubtful about. a breakdown occurs when someone becomes so stressed mentally, they feel as though they've reached the end of their rope, so to speak. Anyone having, or going to have a breakdown will need psychological treatment and evaluation RIGHT AWAY. So a stay in a mental hospital well advised.

A psychotic break can be considered a nervous breakdown when a person loses all touch with reality and drifts away into their own world.

When life coping skills are so overtaxed that everyday functioning becomes very difficult or not possible.

Trauma, dysfunctional family situations, physical illness like depression (as opposed to regular depression all experience), etc are often involved. Your friend probably needs professional help in addition to your support.

NB: Not being able to cope with any situation.

As humans are basically organic machines, sometimes the software becomes corrupted - your friends software needs re-programming, that's all.

Bit of rest, new interests, keep away from stress.
Drugs don't usually work as they do not assist the re-programming of the mind - the only help they give is to give the mind a rest (sleep)...

Due to stress, a person becomes unable to cope, make decisions etc, and loses touch with reality.
The important thing is to recognise it in its early stages, and have it treated.
