Not fully complete. The question is "A man undresses to go to bed and thousands of people lose their jobs. Why?"
The man is Clark Gable. In the movie "It Happened One Night", he took off his shirt to show he had no undershirt on. So great was his influence that men stopped wearing undershirts and the factories making them has to close down.
In a later movie he wore and undershirt and restored it to fashion

Ok that's really difficult. I tried googling it but nothing comes up. You're going to get everyone else thinking about this for 20 years now!
Hmmm as for the lighthouse keeper answer. It's possible but there must be some significance in them losing their jobs because if you die then the job really loses you, not the other way round. It kinda of suggests they are still alive?

excerpt:
"It was Gable's powerful performance as a wisecracking reporter that made the film a success and defined him as the ultimate screen idol. The film caused a sensation at the time as it featured the classic scene of Gable stripping off his shirt to reveal his naked torso. As a result undershirt manufacturers reported a drop in sales of men's undershirts"

Good one - I don't know for now
Perhaps he bought a pyjama factory, and made folks redundant.
No. That can't be right, but I too would be most fascinated to learn the answer.
I shall look at other responses.

It could be a traffic monitor. Since traffic will be terrible, thousands of workers would be late for work and lose their jobs.

It would be dumb, but if Santa Claus were to put on his pajamas and go to bed on Christmas Eve, all his workers would be out of work.
