"Good" carbs are not processed and contain a fair amount fiber (i.e. whole grain bread, oatmeal and whole-grain cereals, legumes, veggies, fruits, etc.) "Bad" carbs are refined or processed (i.e. white bread, white pasta, soda, sugary foods, including ice cream).

There are really no good or bad carbs generally speaking but if you are speaking diet wise then usually a good rule of thumb is "the darker the color of the food the better it is for you"

For example: white rice, white potatoes, white bread, sugar, flour are bad carbs but brown rice, dark colored breads, wheat flour, sweet potatoes, most vegetables and salad greens are examples of good carbs.

Good carbs are basicly complex carbs. These can be found in products that have not been overly refined and sugary and take longer for the body to digest so you not only stay full longer but you use more calories to digest them. Usually if it takes longer to chew it's a good carb (no tootsie rolls do not qualify).

If you are looking to eat mainly good carbs start with vegetables (both cooked and raw), then dark breads, some fruit. Fruit contains allot of sugar but it is used by the body differently, so even though fruit is sweet it is still more than ok to have.

Well, anything refined is bad - white flour, white bread, pasta made using white flour. The reason? They are quickly absorbed and causes your insulin to spike.

A good question to ask is "why is that bad?". Insulin affects how much glucose (simple sugars/carbs) you take in at a time. Too much of this at a time, it'll make your blood sugar go high up and that's not good. In the long run, it can contribute to getting diabetes. Best to avoid refined carbs (notoriously available in most fast food outlets).

Good carbs, on the other hand, like brown rice, whole wheat bread, buckwheat noodles, potatoes and other veggies are digested slowly, and doesn't screw around with your insulin; try to get most of your carbs from these.

yams, carrots and broccoli have carbs, but their vitamins and fiber are worth the carbs.

white bread, cakes, crackers, bad carbs. Packaged crackers have lots of junk in them besides carbs. Avoid them entirely.

any refined flours, sugars or de-natured grains.....are "bad" carbs because the fiber and vitamins have been processed out of them

"good" carbs means whole grains and naturally occurring carbohydrates that are not just empy calories, but they have high fiber and all of their natural characteristics.

in general, "bad carbs" are white.......like flour and sugar

good carbs will have color to them........
