Hail Mary then is the same as Hi Mary now, i.e. it's a greeting, not a method of worship. In the NIV, Luke 1:28, it is written, "Greetings, you who are highly favoured! The LORD is with you." The Good News Bible - "Peace be with you! The Lord is with you and has greatly blessed you!." The Living Bible - "I salute you, favoured lady! The Lord is with you!" I could go on, but you get the point! Go well, and God Bless!

Gabriel had just come upon Joseph and Mary to inform her of the blessings she was about to receive from God.
Luke 1:28 reads, "And coming in, he said to her, "Hail, favored one! The Lord is with you."
The term Hail in that context means little more than "Hello" or "Greetings". To "hail" someone is to get their attention by signal or greeting.
I think what the previous poster was getting at was the Prayer "Hail Mary". That prayer is not in the Bible. That does not mean it shouldn't or couldn't be prayed. While I'm a Christian, I do not pray to the Virgin Mary. That is more a Catholic tradition than biblical direction.
Faith bashing isn't a good thing. If you can't converse about your beliefs without condemning, threatening, or bashing anothers...then you shouldn't be in a discussion forum.

Faith bashing is a terrible but common thing here on yahoo answers. Im not trying to bash you by any means but I dont understand myself why it is that catholics worship Mary. It dosnt make sence to me that because the words Hail Mary were mentioned once in the Bible that you feel you should worship her and have to say so many Hail Mary's to be forgiven of your sins. Again Im not bashing I just dont understand it myself.

I agree with you about bashing faiths not being too productive. I usually answer questions from the Computer and Technology section of Yahoo! Answers. In this category, a question is likely have 2-5 answers within the first 24 hours. However, in the
Religion category, a question is likely to have 20-30 answer within the first hour. It just goes to show how religion is a touchy subject.
As Christians, we are taught to emulate Jesus. In the Gospels, Jesus was constantly attacked by religious critics (i.e.Pharisees, Sadduces) but he refused to get in to a fight with them. Jesus showed a great deal of restraint and wisdom. I think that is something everyone should emulate not only Christians.
In the New Testament, Jesus sharpest criticism was not against the sinners but rather the religious scholars. Jesus used the word "hypocrise" once in the Holy Bible. He used it to described the Sadduces and Pharisees "for not only do they not enter heaven but they also prevent those who want to go to heaven..."

The verse says she is favored among women to bare The Christ. This is true. It is also true that after Jesus, she bore 4 more sons and daughters also. Catholics say she ascended . That is also not in the Bible. In Matthew Jesus tells us call no man your Father, this is reserved for your father in heaven. Believe me , I can go on and on. I'm not bashing. Just quoting Scripture. I was a Catholic, when I asked my priest why so many contradictions. Peter was celibate?, I don't think so, Jesus healed his mother in law
My priest told me that the holy fathers in Rome dictate Catholic beliefs, Not the Bible. That was my last day as a Catholic. Forgive me, if you interpret this as bashing. I do believe there are chosen people within your ranks, they will come out.
If you need scripture email me and I'll be happy to supply. Old and new testament. Read 1 timothy chapter 6 For the qualification of a priest,, It might surprise you that he has to be married with children. Don't take my word for it. look it up.
What you must decide is , What is your authority. The word of God or the word of man..

It was a greeting from the angel to Mary. Depending on the translation reads: Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee.
The bible is a guide, a source of our history, and of the promise of salvation to come. All need not be in the bible to be of value. Yet, tradition and oral teachings should not lightly go away from or be in conflict with sacred scriptures either.
Be open to all the Father has to offer.
Peace be with you.

Well actualy is says Hail, thou that art highly favored, the Lord is with thee. I agree about bashing. I think if people wanna educate others about certain religions they can handle it better than that.
To those who might think hail means like you are to say this as a servant to a King or queen, well its only a way of greeting. Here is the meaning of Hail in the Greek.
1) to rejoice, be glad
2) to rejoice exceedingly
3) to be well, thrive
4) in salutations, hail!
5) at the beginning of letters: to give one greeting, salute

Hail Mary as used in the Bible and the way it is used in the Catholic church are different. In the Bible it is used as a greeting. In the Catholic church it is used as an intro to idilatrous worship---big difference to God.

Hail only to God. Mary was the mother of Jesus. Who like all of us worship God.
Mary is favorite and the purest woman on earth which meant she have never been touch by a man neither before or after having her one and only child "Jesus".

I agree its a greeting! I don't know why people do the faith bashing, it seem to me they don't understand the meaning of Gods free will. He love grace and mercy beyond our thinking. I guess we just need to be patient with them.
