I want to marry my Taiwanese girlfriend. Will it be easier for us to marry in Taiwan or in the United States? (I have USA citizenship.) I'm hoping to avoid legal hassles.

Well it would probably be easiest in her country of origin. If she is not yet a US citizen, shes going to get more hassle here, then if you go to her country and do it. Good luck, and congratulations.

I would call the Chinese embassy in the US and the US embassy in China for their advice. They will know all of those little details that there is no way we can answer. Because rules and regulations change on an almost daily basis, it is best to get information from the source. From what I remember about the Chinese embassy (I was there in 2003), they are sticklers about this kind of stuff and seeing that they aren't on the best terms with Taiwan, getting this straightened out before you try to move to Taiwan or have your fiancee move here would be best.

Here is the contact info:

http://beijing.usembassy-china.org.cn/

And whatever you do, remember that Taiwan is not a country, but part of China. Trust me. If you keep referring to it as a separate country they will be a lot less willing to help you.

Good Luck!

I'm a UK citizen and I investigated this for a Russian girl I met a while ago. Bottom line is that if you declare it to the authorities before you get married - kerching!!$$££. They will charge more for visa's, permits etc and they will want to know everything - the UK asks for £300 for a visa for someone who intends to marry but only £50 for a visitor plus they want the blooming life history of your bride, complete family tree, how you met and some quite private stuff about your relationship. They can you see because you're telling them in advance and they are on the look out for marriages of convenience. My advice is to get a tourist visa and say you met and fell in love while she was staying in the states and you decided to get married - its cheaper and less intrusive.

I don't know legal, but I suggest you go to Taiwan to marry her. ( Unless she is here, thenn marry her here). Take passport and birth certificate. Inquire of Taiwan Embassy on procedure.
