Scientific studies from Lapland University's Department of Lapology indicate that your lap actually enters one of the 'hidden dimensions' when you stand up. (Reference material on String Theory for more information).

Why this happens is generally regarded in the scientific community as being relative to proportional angles, inverse variable subsonic velocity and incidental marginal hypotheses.

As you may know, scientists have been intensely studying this peculiar phenomenon for many years now, for several important reasons.

First there is the general inconvenience of not being able to set something on your lap when you stand up. This shortcoming is estimated to cost Americans 38.4 billion dollars in lost productivity in the workplace.

Second is the issue of diminished revenues in the Lap Dancing Industry. Some estimates suggest dancers income could easily double or triple if your lap was there when you stand up.

Inventors in Romania and Nicaragua have been hard at work trying to develop an artificial lap which would automatically flip into horizontal position, for use when standing.

Stand-up PWC are a type of personal watercraft (PWC) available since the 1970s. They (usually) have a pivoting handlepole and standing tray area that requires the operator to stand while riding instead of sitting. This is in contrast to the more frequently seen "sit-down" type of PWC. Both these terms are jargon used by PWC enthusiasts to distinquish between these primary two types. However, marine regulatory groups, such as the United States Coast Guard, foremost use passenger capacity, rather than riding style, to make distinctions.

"Lap" is the name for the part of your upper legs that is flat horizontal when you bend your legs to sit down. That part goes vertical when you stand up. That is like wondering what happens to your fist when you open your hand.
