as somebody else mentioned, the pay rate will be $1200 every month (not every two weeks) - check out the link to the payscales (he'd be considered an E-1 with less than 4 months of service).

Now, it could be that helicopter repair is one of the fields that they're having trouble keep staffed - so he could get a special bonus for that.

I'm not sure about getting the bonus once he finishes boot camp.

One thing you could do is call a recruiting office (try to make it a different one than the one your brother is dealing with) and say "hey, a friend told me that..." and see what they say.

If you want to know a really good job to do (money wise at least) - tell your brother to look into air traffic control for the Air Force. The chances of him going to Iraq are significantly less - the deployments are generally for 4 months - not 1 year - and they are paying big retention bonuses to keep their air traffic controlers in the Air Force because they can earn two or three times the money outside the military.

the links below are to the army pay scale for enlisted (what your brother would be if he's going in without a college degree), a page that shows different job descriptions for the Army - in this case dealing with Aviation, and the same thing for Air Traffic Controllers in the Air Force.

As for the hazard pay, seperation bonus, etc. - the hazard pay, I'm pretty certain he'd get - if he was in Iraq - or possibly Afgahnistan. There's also the possibility he could go "remote" (without his wife) somewhere like Korea. Depending upon his rank, he might not be able to bring his wife to some duty locations (i.e. she might have to stay in the states). It all depends.

What rank is he going in as. If its a private there is not way that he will make 1100 every two weeks. Right now in Germany (you loose some money over here about 300 a mo) a specialist gets 1100 every two weeks and a PVT2 gets about 800 yes he gets money for his dependants, but not quite that much. For a private E-1 your looking about maybe bringing home 1100 at first he won;t get housing and money like that while he is in basic and ait. That doesn't start until he gets out of the barracks. And if he dies get a sign on bonus you don't get that all at once. my husband sign on bonus was 15,000 we got 10,000 30 days after he graduated from ait then we get the rest on the anniversary of his enlistment. And don't forget about taxes. we only saw 7500 of that 10000. And also remember that when he goes to basic they are gonna take out money for his uniforms and anything else they provided him when he got there. on that first check. And when its time to go to Iraq there is alot of gear that you have to purchase at that time about 300 worth. I hope that this kinda helps you a little. and that it didn't discourage. I love our life in the army. Just so you know i stay at home and we have one child and another on the way and we have extra every month. So there is enough money to make it.

Usually how it works is he will receive half his bonus once he graduates AIT (the course to learn his job). The other half will be paid each month for the time of his service so if he signed for 6 years then we will get it paid to him little by little but in a 6 yr time frame he will have the rest of his bonus paid to him.

As far as his pay when he goes overseas that all depends on where he goes. They have all sorts of diffrent pays. The most common is family seperation pay which is $250.00/mnth and he will most likely be looking on some sort of hazard duty pay.
If he goes overseas he will be looking at a pretty good check.

The $1200 every two weeks does not sound right. It should be more like $1200 a month. The he will not get the bonus upfront. That will be spread out in installments over his enlistment period. He will not see any of the bonus though untill he completes whatever the bonus is for, such as after finishing school.

wow, we were told the army is not doing sign up bonuses right now because they are broke - not until next fiscal year when they will review it. as for how much he will be earning, it depends 100% on his rank and time in. here's a pretty accurate chart. this is base pay - so it does not include things like BAH or COLA (if he located somewhere that gets COLA) or other additional pays.

Theheron is correct, $1200 every two weeks is way too much. You must mean every month.
Sueman--she was not asking if he should join, she was asking if his pay sounds right. Try understating the question before answering.

Good for him, God Bless. He gets married allowance for quarters and several other pays. If he has to go to a combat zone he will also get combat pay and all pay is tax free.
