I stay away from heavy exercise so it won't worsen, and I rest a lot. You do need slow "stretches" though so fat won't build up. Switch to a vegetarian or light eating plus multi vitamins with minerals to keep up your strength.

Stretching exercises can help keep your back muscles relaxed and limber, reducing the likelihood of a strain.

One of the trainers in our fitness center recommended an exercise where you stand facing a pole (or something you can hold onto in the same way) about 6 - 8 inches in front of you. Feet pretty well together, grasp the pole at around chest height, and basically pull back away from the pole. If you're doing it correctly, you should feel it in your back, but not strain your back. I found it to be helpful.

Yes there is!! I had three herniated discs, and actually ended up having complete disc replacements done. However, there are exercises that will help. Check out the link below. This really works! There are pictures as well as instructions, try not to over-do things, but pick a few twice a day that end up working best for you. Hope they help!

Pretty well anything you do can injure it.

Best exercises you can do are ones to strengthen the core muscles of your abdomen. Lie on your back and suck in your abdominal muscles the ones under your pelvic bone, hold and release. You should be going for physio and following the directions they give you there.

Avoid bending down, reaching, and twisting especially.

Hi. Don't mess around with Yahoo on a back injury. See a doctor before you get nerve damage.
