The is no maximum number of weeks that you should train. Most ironman participants and those that I know that run in several marathons a year practice 49 weeks of the year.

Why 49? This gives you time between each marathon for your body to regenerate and renew. Also 3 weeks after the ironman is perfect.

A good way to get ready for a particular marathon is to contact the marathon group directly. They will often have a list of references, free literature and matathon information that they can send you.

Remember that each marathon is different and it will depend not only on the milage but the altitude of the run, the course itself (is it very hilly or prerry level), does it take place in the heat or cool weather.

Be sure to check out the following the links for information on training for a marathon. They'll help you prepare and get your ready for race day:

I also liked this book for an overall course on running and racing in general: http://www.amazon.com/Competitive-Runners/dp/0140469907/ref=pd_bxgy_b_text_b/103-2830397-0573450?ie=UTF8 It's pretty hefty and has some good training plans for 5K up to the marathon (and longer).

Generally, however, most training plans assume a gradual build-up of mileage over 12 - 16 weeks PRIOR to the marathon (assuming you are already running). It'll take you longer if you are brand new to the sport.

Runners World Magazine also is a good source of marathon infomation http://www.runnersworld.com.

Good luck.
