Our daughter is an only child and she always wanted a sibling. She got a taste of having a sister for 6 months when we had a girl stay with us for 6 months from another country. She's 1 year older then our daughter. Even though they got along very well, they also argued a lot too and shared a room. She then said she sort of appreciates being an only child now although she admitts that it was lonely growing up (she always wanted a younger sister). I have an older sister who I was never close to so you never know what you're going to end up with. Be happy and make the best of it. Have friends over as much as possible too.

I have a 10 year old son, and he is not a spoiled brat! He is very smart, and has a vivid imagination. He is quiet and can take care of himself. I have no problems with him at all. There is nothing wrong with being an only child. I think when school time comes around more parents wish they only had one child, so they can afford all the school supplies, and clothing. At Christmas time, my son gets 3 gifts anything he wants and he appreciates everything he has. So whoever said kids who are an only child are brats.................its not true!

I loved it.
I started out as an only child, but in later childhood, was adopted into a very large family. I hated it so much. The other children were all older than me, and were extremely violent. They used me for a punching bag, and worse. The adults, when not abusing me themselves, just looked the other way as these monsters made my life a living hell.
I wish that the do-gooders who thought I needed siblings to make my personality "complete" would have butted out of my life and left me alone. I would rather have been a ward of the state or lived in an orphanage than to have to endure a "family" experience like that.

My daughter is an only child. For the first 7 years she wanted a little bro or sis, but now she is like, " I don't want a brother or sister!". Mind you, she is only 9. Well, she gets all the toys, clothes, and attention. But Im sure it can be lonely sometimes. I don't hear complaints anymore though.

What kind of question is that? An only child doesn't know how it is, because he/she has no comparison.
I can tell you that the only children I have known have been spoiled and selfish and emotional stunted for the most part. But that could be just because of the small sampling.
Sheesh, and other comments.

I'm grown up now, but when I was a kid, I was bored a lot, and kind of lonely. But I've learned to enjoy my own company, and I treasure the time that I can spend by myself now.
It's still a little sad not having siblings, though.
May I add, that we're not all spoiled rotten brats, either.

I liked being an only child. I couldn't imagine it any other way. I liked the privacy of it. Other children struck me as noisy and irriating. They couldn't seem to ever shut up, and to have to live with them would've been pure hell to me.
My parents did have other children, by the way, but I'm the only one who survived infancy.

I was born in a very isolated area with only my parents as friends. We struggled all our lives bringing help to the poor. When they died in an accident I thought I would die too. But to my surprise, the entire region came to our home to take me in as one of them. I still live here by myself. But I am never alone.
