umm, just going by your question....maybe because panties sound "kinkier" or more girlie and feminine than underpants...
but, I'm a girl and I've always called them panties..and all my friends male/female call them panties so, maybe it's just where you grow up that the words are different... I'm from California..
maybe other places would call them briefs or "chonies".....who knows?

It's gotta be a regional thing, or maybe just how you were raised, because my immediate family calls them underwear. My grandma might call them "panties" and "drawers," but she's old.
