Thailand means "land of the free", and throughout its 800-year history, Thailand can boast the distinction of being the only country in Southeast Asia never to have been colonized.

During the reign of King Prajadhipok, (1925-1935), Thailand changed from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. The king abdicated in 1933 and was succeeded by his nephew, King Ananda Mahidol (1935-1946). The country's name was changed from Siam to Thailand with the advent of a democratic government in 1939.

I learned from Thai literature class when I was in undergrad. My teacher told me that it changed Thailand after they have contacts with European countries. Thais are impressed by European countries and they change the name to be liked European countries such as England, Ireland, Finland, Greenland, Holland...
Do you notice that there is no other country in Asia with the name "land"? Another thing is do you observe about Thai flag which looks like flags from European countries. Thai flag has five strips which looks like European countries' flags such as Italy, Holland, France and so on..And again you will rarely see the same pattern of flag in Asian countries.
So I can say that they change their name and flag in order to look like European country.

Wow, learn something new. Guess this shows that the Thais are proud of being who they are and not what others perceive them as.

Basically Europeans called it Siam and the natives never did. So they changed it when they could.
