It's all in your mind, just as dreams are. It's French, déjà-vu just means "already seen".

LOL Katy-Kat!

dejavu is when you are doing something, see something or hear something and you think that you have done it before. Through my research on the mind I have found different explanations and basically put them together to fit. Your mind is made up of chemicals, and as you live, your mind constantly creates chemicals for every little thing, even your subconciousness. I will use an example of a little child and a golden leaf. Lets say this child is 6 years old and is walking in the park and sees a golden leaf. He stares at it not really thinking about it. This is recorded in his subconsious mind and chemicals are produced for this. Now.7 years later when he is 13 years old he walks into a golden room that happens to have leaves painted on the walls. This site will dig into the subconsiousness to find chemicals similar to what he is seeing. When this happens and when you know what you are thinking, you are using the frontal cortex of the mind. It's where thoughts go once they are dug up somewhere in the brain. The chemicals that are produced when you are in the golden room with the leaves painted on them are going to be similar to the ones that were produced 7 years ago when the child saw the golden leaf. When it finally finds the right chemical and brings it to the frontal cortex it seems familiar, hence your dejavu.

WOW I just answered this question already, I'm sure of it.

Deja vu is one of those oddities of the mind - the brain is a complex organ that sometimes doesn't function as well as we might like. From seeing faces in a photo of the martian surface or in the smoke of the burning World Trade Center, to thinking you've already had some experience that you're sure your having for the very first time, simply put, our minds play tricks on us.

As a young boy I went to a camp in the mountains. There was a large hall in the center of the camp that was basically a long rectangular building with a hexagon at one end. While I was there they did a modification to one of the points where rectangle met hexagon and added a drinking fountain. For whatever reason I was sure I had already experienced the building with this modification. I WAS SURE OF IT. Yet there was no possible way I could have, as it did not exist prior to that moment.

The other cause of deja vu is too much drugs, particularly LSD.

I think that will always be a mystery. I heard it has something to do with the fact that the line of time overlaps in some places. Some really complicated theory that I couldn't even begin to explain.

...it's really weird though because everytime I experience it, I stop and think about it for a minute and look around and say to myself that I know I've been there before doing exactly the same thing before. It's weird.

I always thought it had something to do with Einstiens Therory that time runs cocurrently. Would be something interesting to persue. Perhaps you could make a career out of it. You never know.
