I was getting treatment for my borderline personality disorder at my old doctor's surgery, but now we've moved and my old records haven't arrived, and I really need to start having therapy again, also need to have my meds reviewed, but my new doctor just doesn't understand. I tell him I'm self harming again, but he doesn't seem to grasp just how messed up I'm feeling.

Can't understand why your new doctor can't electronically view your records. Your doctor works for a primary care trust so has access. If not request him to telephone your old GP while you are there. At the end of the day the doctor is there for you not the other way round. Out of interest did your old doctor not refer you to the Mental Health Services in your old area. You must have had some support other than your GP.

This is just a suggestion, but perhaps it would help if you took someone else with you to your doctor's appointment. Maybe you can explain everything in detail to someone you trust (e.g. a family member, a friend, a consumer advocate). Then, when it comes time to see your doctor, you will have two people in the office (this will grab the doctor's attention right away, and make him pay more attention to you, because there will be a witness there to say the doctor wasn't paying attention to your needs, etc.) Also, you will have two people there to explain the problems you are experiencing in detail. Hope this helps.

If you feel as if this doctor is not doing anything at all. Ask to see some one else. You really need to keep up your treatment and cant be stopped. Some doctors are so stupid. Take some one with you so that they can talk to the doctor shows him that you really need treatment and you have support behind you. Threatening him could be the last resort! tell him that you are self harming and its on his head if anything does happen as you have told him.

Dont take any medical advice from here, Ipromise you that your doctor has heard it all before many times, he has looked at you and decided that you are not a threat to yourself or anyone else. We have all been confused at some time or other and some people seem to suffer worse but as my mum used to say "The longest day has only got 24 hours" Go back to the Docs tomorrow and sit there and wait, Dont worry youll be ok

You have to go back and ask to see another doctor until you find one that will listen to you. Your Doctor sounds incompetent, hasn't he bothered to even look at your notes?

Maybe he has never come across this disorder before, but that doesn't excuse him, he's a trained doctor and has access to the Internet and medical books, surely he could take the time to read up on it.

Doctors who cant be bothered because they have never come across a disorder infuriate me. There's always a first time for everything. It took a second doctor to diagnose both mine and my sister's cancer....sadly she wasn't as lucky as me!

Explain to your doctor, in detail, how you're feeling and what your doing. With that, plus once he receives your medical records, he should be able to start up your treatment again. Sometimes, it takes time to establish yourself with a new doctor.

Some doctors are not trained or aware enough to recognize and treat mental issues. You need to get a new doctor.

Why aren't you seeking a help from psychiatrist who is a specialist in mental issues? Surgery is a specialty on its own. He/she will have only the minimum training on mental disease.

I think that you need to find a new doctor. Your Psychiatrist should be sympathic to your needs. If you feel your meds need to be reviewed let him know even if you have to be rude to him and ask "are you listening at all". He is supposed to be there to help you not ignore you. Stand up for yourself and let him know how you feel. I guess that i am lucky because i have a sympathic Psychiatrist who listens to be so you demand to be heard.

Any chance a family member could go to the doctor with you and explain from their perspective so the doctor will listen?
