Well she doesn't have to do anything consciously. It's just one of those things...
I mean, if she is part of the chess club and hangs out with computer whizzes and is really smart, then she will be labelled a geek.
If she dresses in the most trendy, expensive, fashionable clothes and has a really cute boyfriend and a ton of friends then she will be labelled as popular.
The people who act dumb and are always acting out in class causing a ruckus and making a mockery of school and the teacher are labelled class clowns.
But I personally, think you should be less worried about the "label" she is going to get in school. You should be more worried about teaching her that "labels" dont define who you are. And that it's ok to stand out from the crowd and be herself. She will be happier to know that she doesn't have to follow some stupid "school label" and that the ONLY expectation she has to live up to, is her Mom's....and that her MOM will LOVE her no matter what.

I do not think things like that will ever change. Kids in schools will always have some type of label. Your daughter will just have to do the best with the label she gets. The slightest thing you do in school can give you a label. When I was in school if I got a label I did not like I just ignored it and it went away. Kids just want reactions from each other and when they see they are not getting one they stop the bullsh*it! It is all growing pains. I think we all have to go through it.

I have both in school right now. My oldest is the GEEK, but he has a 4.57 GPA. And has many colleges wanting him. Which is going to determine the rest of his life. My youngest is popular, he has a different girlfriend every two weeks. I'm glad he is a likable person, and that he has many friends. But I have been out of school for 23 years and now i wish I was the GEEK. I say don't try and give her a label, let her be who she is.

If you are able to, home school her. Home schooling has come a long way and there are tremendous amounts of resources today that weren't there before. There are organized social activities with other home schooling families and study after study has shown that the home schooler's blow out public educated peers 10 to 1 on SAT scores (10-1)
Anyway, the advantages are numerous as curriculum is being taught by you and not many others who may be pushing their own agendas while teaching. Of course this puts a lot of responsibility, sacrifice and commitment squarely on your shoulders.

Labels are for cans. School names are temporary and seldom an indication of who or what that student will go on to be after graduation. The jock at my high school is now a drunk, bald, fat and lonely man. The nerd is a rocket scientist (no joke).
As her mom, you should be encouraging her to be true to herself, not worried about what some insecure kid might call her. You sound pretty immature to be worried about such things.

This is what is called "life", School haven't changes, they have always had cliques. Just teach your child to be good to everyone no matter what clique they are in and it will pay off in the long run. Popular or Geek.....it doesn't matter once they get out of school. Let your child be happy and have "real" friends.... not just ones to gain popularity.

there has always been labels in schools. they're just changed names over the years. perhaps you should teach your daughter that labels are not important and that she should just be herself. there's already enough kids struggling to conform to society's norms. why not create her own norms and just be who she is? you're setting you're daughter up for disappointment by trying to force her into what you deem 'the good group'.

Dress her as a Goth one day then a preppy the next. Military training will get her out of all of that.

She has to do her best as far as studying is concerned, but also find some time to spend with her classmates. She doesn't have to cross the limits to attract their attention
