maybe you can try to make it fun for him by getting books about stuff he REALLY REALLY likes....you know his favorite things. Try to find age appropriate material that is easy for him to digest and sit with him and share the experience with him if you can.
You sound like and AWESOME sister, he is really lucky to have you to care about him and help him....and he will remember this too:)))
ps.
try to talk your mom into buying blueberries...we should all try and eat at least a handfull everyday. they really help your brain function! no joke. dark fresh berries(frozen are okay too) are about the best food on earth, just remember to rinse your mouth, they can stain your teeth:)

Keep reading with him. Maybe have him read a page then you read a page. Make sure he follows along when you read so that he can learn the words. Sight words are very important. The more he sees the words the faster he'll be able to recognize them. By having you both read a page, he will still understand the story. When someone reads really slow it hard to get the understanding of the story. So he'll understand what you read, and it will help him figure out what his says.

Good luck.
You may also want to talk to his Reading teacher. She may have more specific tips since she knows your brother.

my cousin is 8 and she reads really slow. we found that it was actually a problem with the curriculum her school was following--it didn't match up to the pace the other schools are moving at... so now we halp her by making her practice reading random stuff on like bilboards, tv advertisements, children's books and such. she's doing a lot better :]

god bless

For starters you need to let your mother worry about that. Also, everyone reads at their own rate of speed. I think it's better that he reads slow, that way he is concentrating on what he reads and when he is studying his brain probably can absorb more information that way. Don't worry about it...it's probably a good thing for him...

Find some thing that he is interested in. Like dinosaurs. Give him books like that to read. Does he play on the computor? Maybe reading more than you know, they have to read alot about games. Like me I don't read as much, because I have to read the caption on my tv , when watching it., or of course on the computor., since I am deaf. But good idea to have him read you stories. Good Luck Pem

try to make him love the reading.
make him read a lot of nice short stories that he will like then he will read more and that make him better by the time.
i tried that way and it worked.
if that don't work take him to a doctor cause the problem may be in his brain.

Encourage him. Get him to choose books that he wants to read, and spend as much time as you can reading with him. Help him when he needs help, but don't read for him.

Is he dyslexic? Three members of my family are, and they are very smart, although they have terrific problems reading.

Engage him in reading and if it's a picture book, ask him to articulate his thoughts on the pictures or story line (;

But then again, he might be dyslexic, so if the problem still persists, refer him to a specialist.

Best wishes!
