How can I tell if my chihuahua is ready to have her puppies? She's only had one litter before , and she went and hid when she gave birth. When we finally found her, she had three beautiful little babies, but I missed it :(
This time I would like to be with her, but how can I tell she's ready?

Most of the time when a female is ready to whelp she will start looking for a place to nest. You can try setting up someplace for her now and hopefully she will be comfortable there when it is time. Find a nice quiet spot free from interruptions and get her a blanket and some type of box, they want to feel secure. You can monitor her temperature daily if you want to and when it starts dropping, she is getting ready, normal temp is around 100.5 to 102, so look for it to drop under 100. She will also not be interested in food when it gets close to time, just a general feeling of restlessness. Good luck.

She will start rooting. That means she'll start trying to nest by scratching at the floor and blankets. That means it will happen in a few days.Get a kennel for her so you can keep an eye on her or get a box that she can't get out of and make a birthing place for her. Then hopefully you won't miss a thing. It's quit an experience to watch.

Normal gestation can be anywhere from 58 to 65 days from breeding. She will want to find a good spot several days before going into pre-labor. Pre-labor can last several days. During pre-labor she may want to lay in her nest more. Once she refuses food and starts doing a lot of light panting you are probably within 12 hours of actual labor starting up. When real labor begins, she will alternate between rooting around in her nest and resting deeply. Good luck and enjoy those puppies!

she will try to make a bed someplace quiet. she will stop eating and drinking about 3 hours before labor. she will keep getting up and turning around and whimpering. she will start licking her vaginal area over and over.
PS she will not be sleeping before labor. she will just be looking off like she is concentrating.

you are best leaving her to it but just be around if she gets upset. They usually go and hide. Dogs are pretty resilient creatures and dont need pain relief so just make sure you are around to praise her after !

I am concerned that you are breeding your dog without even having the basic knowledge of gestational time frames, building a whelping box, or even being aware when she is showing signs that she will be in labor. Without even knowing the basics, I cant see how you would even know about genetics, OFA certifications, or common health problems within a certain breed and how to avoid them..( I hope that I am wrong)If I am not YOU SHOULD NOT BE BREEDING YOUR DOG. Even if a dog is purebred and papered...this does not mean that they should be bred. The should meet a certain breed standard and be tested for hip/elbow displaysia, obtain OFA certification ect. Please review this information before breeding your female again. This website goes into full detail regarding tips and information on RESPONSIBLE breeding. If you love the breed and would like to continue at the very least you should be responsible about it. http://www.akc.org/breeders/resp_breeding/index.cfm This website offers answers to the info you want to know as well.I know you probably dont want to hear anything about this but at least think about it.
