Hi,

Recently went to the doctors and discovered my cholesterol is high, not sure by how much but I'm only 18, average weight don't eat ANY salt or butter coz it grosses me out and yeah it's kinda got me worried. The doctor was puzzled too and said it probably runs in the family but I still don't want to take any chances. I'M meant to be having an appointment with the dietician to tell me what foods can lower it but no one has got back to me so now I turn to you, the kind people of Yahoo Answers once again! Can anyone give me an extensive list of foods that dramitically lowerr cholesterol please because I'm really worried about it and if I have an extensive list of foods then I can make my diet around it completely, eating meals that only contain said foods.

Try these suggestions for lowering cholesterol, without sacrificing taste

1. Eat a fibre-rich breakfast such as oatmeal, wholegrain muffins and/or fruit. Read cereal box nutrition labels to choose one with five grams or more of fibre per serving. Oat bran and rice bran are the most effective.
2. Switch to whole grains. Choose wholegrain breads, crackers, bagels, muffins, waffles and pancakes.
3. Eat legumes (beans) at least three times a week. Try bean soup, cold bean salad, hoummos sandwiches and black bean dip as snacks. Soy protein is especially effective, so be sure to include plenty. Even soya milk, tofu and textured soy protein are good.
4. Eat five servings of fruits and vegetables every day. One at breakfast, one veggie (e.g. carrot sticks, tomato slices) and one fruit (e.g. orange sections, apple) at lunch, and one salad and one cooked vegetable at dinner...that makes an easy five.
5. Choose whole fruit, skin included, instead of juice. Juice is the fruit with all the fibre removed.
6. Eat garlic. Cooked or raw garlic both contain compounds that help lower your liver's production of cholesterol.
7. Other good foods include raw onion, salmon, olive oil, almonds, walnuts and avocados (the latter five are all high in fat, but most of it is monounsaturated fat which helps to improve cholesterol).
8. Eat plenty of foods that contain the natural antioxidants: vitamins C and E: Rich in Vitamin C Rich in Vitamin ERed and green peppers Cantaloupe Sunflower seeds WalnutsStrawberries Papaya Almonds PeanutsOranges Grapefruit juice Wheatgerm SoybeansBroccoli Brussel sprouts Wheatgerm oil Soybean oil
9. Studies show that a little bit of wine or beer helps cholesterol levels. Binge drinking is not effective, but light to moderate drinking through the week is.

High fiber foods (likes oats, bran, whole grains), have a modest impact in lowering cholesterol by binding bile acids (made from cholesterol) in your intestinal tract. This is always a good option to incorporate into your diet, for more reasons than just cholesterol. The most effective natural remedy is niacin (a B vitamin), but it is not without side effects. Niacin can cause people to have facial flushing (you get very red and feel warm), some people experience this more than others and you may be able to decrease this by taking it with food and an NSAID (aspirin or ibuprofen). The best niacin products are available by prescription only, I suggest talking to your doctor about this. It is also safe to take niacin with ezetimibe (but your doctor should know). There are other natural products that claim to lower cholesterol like garlic, but most of these methods have very little evidence to support their use and have their own set of side effects as well. I am in my sixth and final year of pharmacy school, I hope that you find this information useful. PS ezitemibe has a lower incidence of muscle pain than the statins, you should give it a shot. Well, my friend. At least you are concerned about it.
Eggs have a lot of cholesterol.
Sausage has a lot of cholesterol.
Cheese has a lot of cholesterol.
Almost all dairy products have a lot of cholesterol.
Watch your salad dressings, they contain bad stuff as well.
Eat lots of leafy, green vegetables.
Lean meat such as chicken, turkey, but don't fry it, bake or broil and get a can of cooking spray.
Oatmeal is excellent in reducing cholesterol. So are Cheerios (don't particularly like but just info).
Get yourself a paperback that lists the worst foods for cholesterol. Sometimes, high cholesterol is genetic. I take red yeast rice (in capsule form and over the counter) It works.
Good luck. You will get is done. Try to keep your cholesterol under 200.

You should be concerned. If I were you I would have my cholesterol level determined and then go on a diet that was essentially fat-free, for about two weeks, and then have the cholesterol level run again. If the level is still high, see the doctor again and tell him what you did. This will provide him with valuable information that he can use in dealing with your case. The diet that you should go on should be free of all fatty foods, no salty snack items like potato chips, a minimum of 2% milk, no ice cream, etc. If necessary get someone familiar with food analysis to help you. Garlic.
Oily fish.
Fresh vegetables, especially green ones like cabbage and broccoli.
Oat-based cerials like porridge.

Also reduce the amount of fried food you eat.
Increase the amount of boiled, grilled and steamed food.

Remember, cholesterol is not the same as body fat.
A lot of people say "I can't have cholesterol because I'm not fat". That's because they don't understand what cholesterol actually is.
It's quite common to find thin people with extremely high cholesterol levels, and fat people with a low cholesterol count.

Also, remember that your body needs a certain amount of cholesterol to stay alive. Not enough can be as dangerous as too much.
So take care that you don't try to eliminate it altogether. Just keep it under control.

Cholesterol is not something you can get rid of it totally . You can lower it and maintain it.

To give you a list that you need discipline to keep to it is not practical . My advice is eat all you can , but in small portion for those that will worsen it . Remember nice to eat food is not healthy for your body. Healthy food is not nice to eat .

To effectively reduce & maintain cholesterol level , you may do this.
- reduce seafoods intake except fish.
- eat a quava a day
- exercise ( must sweat until you can feel the heat travels around your body , or face turns rosy cheek ) minimum half an hour a day , but not more than one hour. Exercise at least 3 times a week.
- boil 600ml of water with 5 or 6 quava ( small unripe quava about size of a pinpone ball ) plus 6 water chestnut , boil until the water is about 300ml , drink it hot or luke warm . Drink it once a week , gradually once in two weeks , then 3 weeks once . This is
a very effective way to reduce chol.
- no human is discipline enough , as far as long term is concern , may be for life , eat all you can , enjoy food but keep those fried, roasted , grilled one to minimum.

I did that , no problem so far . I still enjoy all sorts of food and my chol. has not deteriorated.

First, don't worry too much about "high" cholesterol. Cholesterol in and of itself is a good thing: the liver produces it because both the good kind(high density) and so called "bad" kind(low density) have useful functions in our bloodstream. On the web you will find lots of information about apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, olive and coconut oil, etc. which are extremely healthy oils which folks have used for centuries. Use these. In fact, if you'll study the Asian pacific, Carribean, and Mediterranean traditional diets you'll see that those cultures which consumed such oils, and foods cooked in/with such oils, had virtually no history of heart disease, which is the main concern associated with high cholesterol. Avoid like the plague hydrogenated oils which are in nearly all the highly processed snack foods(read the labels and you'll what I'm talking about). Study after study have shown this is the oil to avoid as much as possible for heart health- it's a man-made oil which serves as a preservative.

Eat all the fresh fruits and vegetables you like, wild caught fish, farm-raised chickens and beef, and avoid pork. There are so many great things to eat that will keep you in great health for many, many years, and let the cholesterol take care of itself. It's really not the "problem".

Finally, don't take my word for it, I'm just a learner. Spend some time researching this cholesterol stuff yourself on the web and you'll see. Very little cholesterol actually enters our bodies through what we eat; it's internally produced. To your health!

Hi ive also recently just be told that i also have high cholesterol i had a blood test ist then my gp phone and i booked an appt the next day.He gave me a whole lot off information off the website look under www.patient.co.uk its all on there,the foods that are very high are eggs,cheese,full milk,chocolate,crisps, any sort off fat on meat,check on the bck off item and see what fat units they have.Foods you can eat are fibre,fruit,veg,all foods that dont have alot off fat in.You said you went to your gp really he should off told you what your results were as you are the patient you have rights to see them.If your results were high you should off been put on medication to lower the cholesterol for the ifirst 3 mths then go bck and see him to see what the cholesterol is then.Get bck in touch with the dietician and see whats going on if not your gp.Good Luck
