A Bit Of Professional Advice Which May Be Of Use To You
You can use xp disk as you would to do a normal install at the instalation screen pick repair windows leave file system as it is this will re install windows but leave your files as they are on the computer
all that will not be available are any updates that you installed due to your windows being back to its original install DONOT pick the change file system or your drive will be auto formatted that is a clean install that destoys all on the hard drive you will still need your serial number to re install
Dual booting is not advised with Vista and XP consider also that if the first partition fails the whole hard drive will need to be formatted with the loss of both you will also need a partition manager to make the partitions unless you know the command line instructions to do this within Dos

Make sure your have your Windows XP cd and your cd-key on hand before you format your system. Also, make sure you have all the drivers you need to get the system fully installed before you format it. There is nothing as bad as suddenly not beeing able to install your network card or modem that you need to get your other drivers of your server or the internet! :))
To run multiple OS, get a Boot Manager.

1. Backup existing important documents.
2. From your existing experience figure out, how many drives (partitions) your harddisk needs so you can organize content even granularly.

hey dude.. back up ur important stuff before formatting ur sys..
most of the people forget to backup their important stuff... n i hav repeated this many times..... atlest u try to avoid this....
If u hav 40G hard drive and only one drive or local disk C:\ on it then try to partition ur system into 4 partitions with 10GB each.
this is will be useful to store or bachup ur documents or any stuff on other drives, at the time of reformatting ur system again.... in the future...
...and now, if u dont hav any partitions on ur system to backup.. thns try to bbackup them in the CD (itz better if u go for CD-RW)
or any storage device.....
if ur intrested to work on different OS, then try to install 2 different OS in ur syst... i suggest to install windows XP professional and UNIX environment...... will be useful 2 u in the future...
wish u gud luck dude...

Make a checklist of things to backup.
Documents, favourites, shared stuff etc. The number of times I've re-installed and forgotten to back something up is just so annoying.

Be prepared to reinstall every program on it. Why reformat? That is drastic.
