Sorry I wasn't going to get involved , but Naples6, You forced my hand. Where was The USA , say in Aug/14 or Sept/39. England with the help of the Commonwealth held out until Hitler made his big mistake of turning on Russia. If it wasn't for that we would all be singing "Deuchland Uber Allus". I will admit that thanks to the only intelligent Pres. the US has ever had (FDR), and his advisor,Lt. Comm. Mc Collum, they devised a plan to have Japan attack Pearl Harbour. In July/41 over 80% of Americans wanted nothing to do with the War in Europe.Boy, those suckers changed their minds on 07/12/41.FDR did not want to deal with a Nazi europe( that would have worked out fine for George W,'s granddaddy, Ford, GM, and a whole bunch of Corp. niceguys) But not for good old FDR. Anyway with some help from the US we defeated Germany.

You are so misinformed it's laughable. I don't doubt that the number of innocent Iraqi people killed is accurate; however, the way they were killed probably is NOT. Most of the innocent Iraqis that have been killed, were murdered by the insurgents, not by American OR British troops (you guys are there, too, remember?).
Many of my husband's and my friends are there now, or have been there. I can tell you that I don't ask them what it's like to have to make the decision to end someone's life. I realize that every single one of them is human, that they only do what they HAVE to do to survive.
How do they survive? Well, either they go through counseling, or they go nuts. I've met plenty of both.
I have a friend now who is convinced that he sees demonic presences everywhere. He was in Iraq for about a year. He refused counseling when he returned, even though his wife, my husband, and I all told him he needed it.
The kind of question that you're asking certainly isn't making it any easier for people like him.
I hope that you realize that soldiers (American and UK, and soldiers all over the world) work to keep you free. Maybe not right this moment, but consistently throughout history they have.
You'd have to be blind to not see it.

Say what you want about Americans and our Military, but I guarantee if your beloved England ever finds their-selves in a threatening conflict with another country that is planning an attack on you, the Americans will be the first country that is called and our Military will be the first ones there to defend your butt.
Other countries always want us to protect them from the enemy because they know we will, and they know our Military is strong and won't leave until the job is done.
As far as our soldiers thinking about the grief they cause the families of the people they kill, I think the fanatical idiot who did something horrible that caused our troops to kill him or her is the one to blame. These terrorist and extremest put their own families in jeopardy all the time, so were probably saving the lives of those families by eliminating their crazy relative.
We don't condone soldiers that kill or hurt innocent people, and we believe if they do something like that, then they need to be punished for it. But when they kill the morons causing all the trouble, we stand behind them.

I have no shame for my troops, I support each and every last one of them.

The troops of America are not taught to kill another human being, but it is a job requirement in the right situation. What about the people that attack them? Do they think about their families? Do they think about the grief it will cause someone else if they kill them? No, last time I checked the English have troops over there also, why not ask one of them. How do they live with themselves, I know if I were over in the Middle East and I got into a position where it was either I was going to die, or I was going to be killed by a suicide bomber, damn well bet I'm going to kill them first, to not only save my own skin but those around me that don't deserve to die because 1 person is selfish.

I know many American Troops that have been over there and never fired a shot in anger, but you have to look at the other side of it all. Those people don't think about the families of the people they are about to kill, hell half of the time they don't even think of their own families when they are about to kill themselves on some suicide bomb mission.

How do you live with yourself knowing that your country men kill, have killed, and are willing to kill just to protect or survive? Me personally I am greatful for what my American men and women do over there.

The only shame I feel when shooting at my enemy is this: When I miss a target within the maximum effective range of my weapon. I just hang my head when that happens.

As to how I live with that, knowing that I did my duty is sufficient. I wonder how cowards live with themselves, personally. They share in the benefits of the freedoms they have, but don't do their part in keeping those freedoms secure.

Hello! Soldiers have been paid to defend their nation for years! And come to think of it, your nation was rather good at that for centuries! And, you have soldiers who do the same thing today, and are stationed in Iraq and Afghanistan, helping us. I'm rather proud of them.

As to sending my son, that is a decision he will make when it is his turn to make it, as we have an all-volunteer Army.

No shame at my house. No soldier is paid to kill but rather to protect us from terrorism & save our freedoms. They fight so you can ride your tubes, subways or whatever you call them & not be blown up.
They fight so you can say stupid things & not be thrown in prison or killed like during Nazi rule.
My son does serve & I am proud of him. He understands sacrifice for others. I have raised him to be unselfish & patriotic.
Maybe you should get tested for your problems - with this negativity I would turn to substance abuse to live too.

By the way, Soldiers are defending you not reading this dribble!

How did your country feel killing the Germans?
How about the bombing of Dresden and killing hundreds of thousands of German women and children; even though you knew the war was over and there were no soldiers there.
