Bilal,
Seems there is a gulf between what you've written and what ACTUALLY happens in some muslim countries (ie Afghanistan under the Taliban, Iran etc.) Care to explain why the rules you've outlined are added to?

seeker,
In some muslim countries women are neither allowed to vote or to drive. Doesn't seem very progressive to me. And seems discriminatory also!!!!!!!

Well yeah I do, but it's their religion and if they're happy then it's ok.

OK man, it's one of those questions I'd love to be able to give a different answer to but can't.

The treatment of women in most "Islamic" countries is very unIslamic.

Bilal was right to say what he did. Muslims SHOULD treat women with the highest regard. All to often in Islam as in any faith, those who proclaim their faith the loudest and longest are often the most appalling examples of people who have latched on to a faith but don't adhere to the rules.

The rules of Islam, Christianity and Judaism aren't outdated.

The relentless refusal of mankind to treat each other with respect and refusal to obey God is very much outdated. Man has never obeyed God. Using religion to coerce others in to cruelty and evil is ever so outdated.

It's time that Muslims actually read the Qur'an,
Christians read the Bible and
Jews read the Torah.

Many do but not enough. Far too few take any notice of what they read.

I think your question should really be:

Is the treatment of women in most "Islamic" countries outdated, discriminatory and unIslamic?

My answer to that is yes.

What are you talking about?

God says in the Qur'an:

4:34 MEN SHALL take full care of women with the bounties which God has bestowed more abundantly on the former than on the latter

2:241 For divorced women Maintenance (should be provided) on a reasonable (scale).

4:7 From what is left by parents and those nearest related there is a share for men and a share for women, whether the property be small or large,-a determinate share.

4:19 O you who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will. Nor should you treat them with harshness, that you may Take away part of the dower you have given them.

As an American woman who has been living in the middle east for over 6 years now, I would have to say that the women under ISLAMIC LAW (not some physco interpretation of islam) are treated better than most women in the west! Anyway the women here in the middle east think the American women are the ones who have it bad (and i have come to agree)!! so culture does play a role in the way you see things

hi I'm most worried about the morality police in some Arabian countries ,the clothes the women chose to wear are taking away all individuality ,if a Muslim women did something that she should be recognised for publicly no one would know who she was . Lots of young girls and women are being publicly hanged lashed or stoned to death its medieval

Probably yes, but listening to the interminable gossip, chatter and nagging from western women, maybe they have a point. At least they recognise that women ARE different from men (I didn't say better or worse, just different) and each has their own place in life, the women produce and raise children, manage the home and family while the men go out and hunt (earn cash in this day and age) to support that family and, when needed, defend the family and its possessions. Neither is adequate on its own.

First tell me how you define the Islamic treatment of women.
I am a Muslim woman so I will be able to give you an honest answer.
Do not ask questions if you can't back them up, you only end up sounding silly and immature.

Well as a muslim woman i dont think Islam rule about women is oudated neither it discriminate us with men.. (didnt this ring the bell? u know about the old day when church been to hard on women and discriminate them)..well Islam is a religion that give prior to prevention is better than cure..why we dont really into or like women to wear sexy clothes are due to the fact that it can harm the woman herself, she might be the next seriel rapist victim..and this goes the same if i was not mistaken with christian rule about their women..am i right? coz i read bible once..if muslim women said they were being oppressed by the rules i think they ought to study about islam more..dont read Quran literary..but we must read between the lines..this also same with bible..that is why in Islam besides than reading n understanding Quran we must also consult what Prophet Muhammad said..in Islam women r equal to men..who says we r not..women r allow to work, study etc..so who say we r suppressed by the rules??..

I think by educate our selves to other people faiths, norms and values can help us from being an ignorance person..through this we can understand the do's and dont in other people religions, so that we can respect each other and live in harmony despite our differences. it doesnt mean if we learned about other people religion we r going to convert into one but then we r educating ourselves from being ignorance...in my opinion respecting other people religions n believe could help us to make world a better place to live in.
Accept people the way they are not what we want them to be..WorLd PEaCe

In Islam men are told to protect women.
I am sure if you resarched properly you could find other countries that treat women badly that are not an Islamic majority.

No it is not..how can you decide how we want to be treated when you don't even understand it now?? You should really learn about an issue before you make negative comments about it.. Do you know any Muslim women??
