Protein in the urine usually indicates kidney damage or disease that can be caused by conditions such as an infection, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), or glomerulonephritis.
Protein in the urine can also be caused by heart failure, leukemia, poison (lead or mercury poisoning), or a condition during pregnancy that results in high blood pressure (preeclampsia).

I am not sure what the normal range is for 24 hour urine protein which can vary from lab to lab so without that info it really isn't possible to tell you if this number is good or bad. Generally, very little protein should be excreted in the urine. An excessive amount of protein in the urine indicated that the kidneys may be damaged and is an early sign of kidney damage or kidney failure. This can be an indication of a chronic or acute kidney problem. I am sure that other tests were ordered as well and that this number in combination with the other tests the doctor ordered will tell you a lot more than one number alone.
Pregnant women get a urine dipstick test done at every doctor appointment. This is mainly to check for protein in the urine which can be an early sign of preeclampsia. Preeclampsia can threaten the life of mother and baby and sometimes indicates that a preterm delivery must be performed to save both lives.

Do you have problems with your kidneys?
Do you exersize a lot?
Do you have hypertension?
Protiens are big molecules which usually cannot pass thru the kidneys. Some explanations would be if you have high blood pressure, exersize vigorously or have hypertension.
Its probably related to renal issues of some kinds. If you are having a 24 hour urine collection, they are checking your kidneys for functioning or a Bence Jones?

Could mean you have a kidney problem. Normally, the kidneys are not supposed to allow much protein to pass into the urine.
