The fish oil pills are great! You might also, for now anyway until he's better, also give him about 1 tablespoon of veg. oil on his food. Also, there's a product made for dogs called Linatone that you can get him. If you brush him every day or so that will help distribute the oils in his coat and should also help him along. If that doesn't work in a reasonable period of time, you may need to have a vet check him to see what else is going on.

Good idea switching dog food and fish oil pills will really help his coat. But switching from one food to another can give the dog some diarrhea. Iams isnt that good a food either. When I adopted my dog, a malamute, who is 7 years old, we had no idea what she had been being fed and she had dry flaky skin, and we started feeding her Nutro which is very good healthy dog food. Its a bit more expensive but it is so much better for her. Nutro, Ultra, Eukanuba, are all very good to give him. We also mixed in a little bit of canned food and a raw egg once a day. It probably took about 2-3 months for her flaky skin to go completely away-it was summer so her shedding didnt help. But getting your dog on good food and giving him fish oil and/or raw eggs should really help clear it up. Also, does your dog have fleas? Make sure he's on some sort of flea/tick control to make sure he's not scratching himself giving him those scabs.
Hope this helps!

Try Dermcare Fish oil (it has lots of vitamins and the dogs love it!) instead of the pills. Petsmart sells it for $16.99 per bottle. My chihuahua had a similar problem (except his hair fell out in large patches) and it seemed to help. Plus, the bottle lasts forever. My vet recommended it over the pills because the oil gets digested better than the pills. Good luck to you!

Also, you may want to talk to your vet, as he may have some type of worm (i.e. ringworm or mange) if the problem gets any worse. I hope your puppy feels better!

P.S. Vegetable oil is not a good idea. It can hurt their digestive system and give them diarhea like you have never seen.

Change his food to eukanuba for large breed dogs and get the liquid form of fish oil and use a small amount with this food because it has fish oils in it already. It could also be allergic reaction to food or fleas.Change the food and try Revolution for the fleas. Its the best stuff on the market for fleas and it has protection from heartworm in it to.

Sounds like your pet may have allergies to something. My mother went through the same thing with her pomeranian, seemed to be stemmed from Febreeze and other cleaning supplies that the dog was coming into contact with.(indoor dog) Turns out, after removing all the irritants, the dog had Thyroid issues that were the true cause. I would speak with your vet, and let him/her do a thorough exam to see if they can find out what is going on. Good luck!

I have two goldens. I don't like Iams. Buy nutro or wellness. MUCH better. Also, give him 2 benadryl (25mg) once a day. This will help with his allergies, which cause dry skin. Finally, buy oatmeal dog shampoo, and aveeno oatmeal bath powder. It will be difficult, but you have to give him an oatmeal bath.

All of these will help...been there, done that!

You could try raw eggs mixed with dog food- only once a week though. Hartz makes an effective hydrocortisone spray for the itch. But then you are only treating the symptoms not the cause. Make an appointment with your vet and ask his opinion. He is the trained professional.

It could be the food, it could also be seasonal allergies. This just happened to my three year old pug. We give her benadryl, but before we knew we notice a bunch of scarbs and marks in her little face creases that looked like bug bites. After they didn't go away for a few weeks we took her in and found out she has allergies.

It could be allergies, it could also be fleas that you don't see. Olive Oil in his food is good, too. But if you have had him on Iams for longer than a month and it hasn't improved, then you need a vet. The sores he is creating can become infected. He's your baby, help him!

first off, iams isnt the greatest. i use it with my cats and am about to switch to Neutro, or nutro. but he may have an allergy to something. or something more severe. especially since he is 7, take him to the vet soon. good luck.
