Depends on what part of China.and what nationality you are and whether it's for business or pleasure. Check your local embassy for full requirements: Here's the United States Chinese embassy.

From personal pleasure travel, I know that you can enter Hong Kong with just your American passport as long as it has 30 days still remaining on it.
If you want to visit Taiwan, the passport has to have 6 months remaining on it. I once went to Taiwan with 5 months and 3 weeks remaining on my passport and sad to say, learned about the 6 month rule. In order to enter Taiwan, I had to purchase an instant visitor's visa for $150 cash.
I believe to visit interior China (Shanghai et al) that you will need to apply for a Visa.
I don't know what the requirements are for Macao.

i am not a world traveler, i went to china last year and this year, if you plan on entering and leaving mainland china more than once you need a multi entry visa, expert visa.com is where i got mine, they are in chicago. if you only want to go into mainland china one time and leave one time you only need a one time entry visa......and your passport of course. you don't need to bring much american money, i used my check card at atm's of the bank of china. you can take out $2500 yuan twice a day, that is the equivalent of over $600 us dollars....it is the cheapest and safest way.

You need a chinese visa. These are available from the Consular section of the chinese embassy in Portland Place, London. If you hand it in before 10am , ask for same day, you should get it back between 1130am and 12pm. Can't remember what it costs. Check out their website.
