Thanks everyone so much! I think it may be that i either boiled them too long or left them sit too long. After reading your answers, thats the only different thing I did. thanks!

either too much milk or butter or both.....It could also be you didn't drain all the water out of them before mashing

What Makes Mashed Potatoes Pasty

You probably need more milk. If it is pasty then it seems like it is too thick. Liquid will help that. Also, if you end up adding too much milk you can always put in some instant potatos to make it so that it is the right consistency. Good luck.

There are really only 4 ingredients in mashed potatoes.
1. Potatoes
2. Milk
3. Butter
4. Salt

If they are too lumpy, then add more butter or milk (we prefer butter. it makes for a great taste)

If it is too creamy, them put less in of the milk

Try that.

Do you keep your potatoes in the refrigerator? If so, that will increase the starch in them..take them out of the fridge. Also, over whipping them will make them pasty.

There is alot of starch in potatoes. Try butter and milk to remedy this stickiness.

It sounds like you aren't adding quite enough milk. You have to add the milk a little at a time to make sure you don't get too much or they get runny.

not rinsing the potatoes before you boil them. you have to rinse off the starch and you are meant to use warm milk if you are mashing

Mash them while they're still hot, also cooking them too long can make them like glue once they're mashed as well
