Good morning...I'm an ex-Catholic because little or nothing that I was taught in CCD was taught in the Bible. When there were scripture verses, they had only superficial importance to the topic presented, at best.
I also disagree with the Church's teachings on birth control. Although I'm personally pro-life, I had friends get ex-communicated and shunned for getting an abortion. This is inexcusable...a Christian organization throwing out people who need them the most. All of the women that I personally knew who endured this weren't using abortion for birth control, and they went through double the torture as a result of what the Church did to them.
Finally, the Chruch made me feel as though God was someone who could only be reached via prayer to a saint, or to the Virgin Mary. I simply couldn't find this in the Word...anywhere.

I went to a Catholic grade school for 8 years and when I left there I drifted away from the church and sort of went soul searching.
After many years of putting God on the back burner, I met my future wife. Her parents were very devout Christians and I did not want to be associated with that (bible thumpers and all) but as I got to know them and noticed what they were all about I started doing Bible studies and found out what I was missing all these years: Jesus. I was baptized at the age of 32 and I love the Lord to this day. In answer to why I left - Catholics do not teach about Christ the way He should be taught. Catholics add there human beliefs to the bible.

I am not an ex Catholic, but I think a lot of people that leave the Church never really felt connected to it. A lot of people consider themselves Catholic because their parents had them baptized as babies, but their religious education ended there. To really be an active Catholic it is important to know why Catholics worship in the ways that they do and what the Catholic Church actually teaches. There is a lot of misconception out there as to what we do or do not believe and why. I would hope that anyone that is an ex Catholic is at least involved in some other Christ centered church that can meet their needs, which does not express an "anti-catholic" attitude.
By the way, if a catholic is worshiping Mary or the Pope or any saint they are NOT following Church teaching!!!

I'm an ex-Catholic simply because once I read the bible for myself, I saw how far the Catholic doctrine was from the Word of God.
The more I studied the bible, the more I realized that Catholocism was a cult and a pagan religion. I had to leave because I saw the truth.

When I was about 12 y/o I was standing in church mumbling along with the rest of the sheep I believe in the holy spirit, the holy catholic church; the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life ...no i don't. It just sort of hit me that I really didn't believe a word of all these fairy tales. It was the inverse of Saul on the road to Damascus. Knocked off my perch by a blinding light of good sense. Of course there was more to it than that. There was a long history of betrayal by religious figures in my life who when I asked them for bread, told me I really wanted stones. And I had to do some heavy duty thinking to justify my position. It's called free thinking for a reason.
But I am OK now and am still working on burying all the anger and bitterness. Some of the physical scars have faded. The ones on the inside are harder.
They say ev'rything can be replaced,
Yet ev'ry distance is not near.
So I remember ev'ry face
Of ev'ry man who put me here.
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.
They say ev'ry man needs protection,
They say ev'ry man must fall.
Yet I swear I see my reflection
Some place so high above this wall.
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.
Standing next to me in this lonely crowd,
Is a man who swears he's not to blame.
All day long I hear him shout so loud,
Crying out that he was framed.
I see my light come shining
From the west unto the east.
Any day now, any day now,
I shall be released.

I call myself a "recovering" catholic, kind of like a recovering alcoholic. =-)
I left for a multitude of reasons, but primarily the overall attitude towards women. It really contributes to many of the church's problems. Priests are celebate because the church does not value the importance (and some would say holiness) of a sexual relationship between a man and a women. And, only men can be priests (celebate ones!). Add to this the ridiculous abortion (keep church and state distinct!!) debate, refusal to allow access to reliable contraception, and the priest pedophile scandals, and you basically have a cesspool.

Returning Practicing Catholic.
I went way "South" ... got burnt (no pun intd) ... then went searching for answers when my dad passed away. I went to so many different religions, but when I retook the RCIA class, it all lit up and made the most spiritual sense, and I've been at peace since. Praise be Jesus.
God bless, sorry to hear you base spirituality on TV and salesmanship & religious bashing; however, it's pleasing to see that you've got the "Umpt" of happiness from it. Hopefully, this spirituality you in will take away your hostility. Peace be with you.

I left because of hypocrisy of all religions, Religions could care less about serving God or saving souls. Their purpose is to preserve the Church a man made business.

when i was younger i was forced to go to a catholic school cause it was the only private school in town and i hated it so much. I'm not catholic. i don't believe in praying to Mary or any saints. people should only pray to god, Jesus or the holy spirit. no one else has powers to answer your prayers. they also worship Mary and the pope too, they treat the pope like he's a king. then the whole confession thing asking the priest to forgive us, i thought that was a crock, only god can forgive us, not a human being. we are suppose to pray to god directly and ask him to forgive our sins. i mean i thought it was all ridiculous. i begged my mom to put me in a public school then she did.
why are you an ex catholic? im curious to know. i know alot of people who are.
GOOD FOR YOU, I'M SO GLAD SOMEONE LED YOU TO HAVE A RELATIONSHIP WITH JESUS CHRIST. YOU CANT GET TO HEAVEN WITH OUT IT.
