I'm getting a Maltese puppy as a gift and I want to be prepared for it. I'd prefer to keep his coat short, any tips on how to trim it myself? I'd also like any daily grooming tips you could offer as well, especially on how to keep his face clean to prevent staining.

You can buy products in pet stores that will help with the tear stains on his face. As for grooming, what you need to get is a small size pin brush and a small slicker. If you brush the puppy with the pin brush thoroughly, making sure you get down to the skin, about 1 - 2 times per week, that will keep his coat looking beautiful. (You can't hurt him with this brush, so don't worry.) The slicker is only to be used to tease out mats. You do have to be a bit careful with this brush. You need to be gentle, put your finger between his skin and where you're brushing (so you're brushing over top of your finger, rather than hitting his skin).

If you want to trim his hair, buy yourself really good quality dog scissors which have a rounded tip. Please, please don't keep his hair too short - maltese are gorgeous when they have their hair. If you trim it to a manageable length, he'll always look good.

You should start training him for very short periods of time to lie on his side for grooming, and get him used to the sound the scissors make, so that when he's a bit older, he'll love his grooming. I've groomed afghans and other long haired dogs for a lot of years and never had one that didn't love his grooming time. Have fun with your puppy!

in the event that they mats are tight, then the only decision is clipping them out with electric powered clippers, no scissors of any sort. you will decrease your dogs. in the event that they are loose, and loose being a "no longer undemanding tangle", you are able to heavily brush them out with a delicate slicker brush. Maltese proprietors consistently have hardship with tear stains. you are able to visit an area puppy keep and purchase medicated wipes specifically for tear stains and gently shrink the redness. additionally, i might have a groomer shave the front of the attention the place they are and initiate over. you are able to help preclude tear stains by utilising "angel eyes". that's a powder which you prepare on your dogs water that prevents them for the main area, and you will see outcomes in approximately 2 weeks. For paw stains use whitening shampoos to shrink the quantity of redness. that's confusing to maintain a white dogs very white. :)

Staining happens. You can pay a lot for swabs but they are a lot. I have a malti mix and I just take him outside and cut his hair to about 1 inch long all over. That's it! You don't want to go too short because their skin is white.
