Yoga's great in many ways- yes, I believe that in time it would help you to get away from the need for alcohol, but you have to give it time for your body to get used to it- almost like a prescription drug, your body has to sort of adjust and accept the new levels of relaxation- you will not be able to relax to the same level on your first, second, third or thirtieth go in comparison to where you will get later down the track- it's a long-term commitment, but it also has long-term health benefits.

In the short-term, you can be sure to feel some definite relaxation and it's a great low-impact physical thing to do to occupy yourself.

Yoga will also help with blood-flow and muscle toning, which will make you feel better physically, naturally.

Definitely give it a go- nothing other than benefits can come from it!

In some cases, I've known yoga to replace the addiction. There have been students how don't smoke anymore but can't wait to get to yoga. Addictive personalities need to find addictions. And if you find a healthy addiction to replace an unhealthy one, that's wonderful.
About having the brain in a different state... if you practice yoga long enough, if you go into meditation frequently enough, you'll find your mind going off into a different state. I told my boyfriend once that it felt like I was on a mushroom trip... but without the consequences.
I used to be a miserable angry person but since practicing yoga religiously for about 1.5 years, my life has changed. People say that I'm so positive and happy - but not like insane crazy and happy... more balanced.
So, good luck in your endeavor. I hope you find what you're looking for.

Yoga is totally gay. Better to do vigorous manly exercise, like weight lifting. I'm also a recovering alcoholic, and that has been the best thing for me.
