I want to buy my boyfriend a home theatre for his birthday, but I am very inexperienced in buying electronics. I don't have a huge budget and would like to get the most "bang for my buck". We live in a small house and we will not be moving for at least 2 years so I don't need to fill a huge space. I want to be able to hook up his playstation and the TV to the surround system, not just the DVD player. Is my $300 budget unrealistic? Can someone help me and recommend a good system so I won't feel like I wasted my money. Thank you for your help.

Onkyo HT-S590 at Circuit City. Right now it's about $250.

Make sure the htib has a fully functional receiver so your boyfriend can hook up his audio to the surround sound. Most htib units are not fully functional especially the ones with DVD players built in. Separate components is a much better idea in case there is a malfunction somewhere. Yamaha is my recommendation.

any of the sony home theatre set-ups should work fine for you-they can be had for a reasonable price (£200-600). have built-in dvd players. an optical input for the ps2 (mine is hooked up in the same way=awesome). are multi-channel surround sound (the latest ones have dolby pro-logic 2 and dts) with some models having an output power of 600 watts plus!! all in a nice box that sits nicely under your telly-i bought one about 4 years ago and it became one of my better investments.

you can get a shelf system for that much that would transfer to another room when you move but realistically for a true home theater (full surround w/sub) if you don't spend a couple grand I would be surprised...most good (powerful) receivers (amplifier and source input/output) cost about a grand themselves...the add speakers Bose are nice and come with a sub for the right set another $1200 there plus mounting hardware about $250 there and wiring another $250-$500...so a shelf system is about what $300 will get which isn't bad...when you move put it in the bedroom you won't be disappointed...which one though is a good question...I think Panasonic makes a DVD with home theater for inexpensive its pretty decent (my friend has one) but depends on what your looking for too in a home theater experience...I go a little nuts when it comes to audio and video equipment though...obviously

Try Wal-Mart, or even Target. But if you want to hook more than just your DVD player check out their features and see if you can hook them up to their system before you buy it. You may have to spend more than $300 to get all the features you want.
Good luck.

all the chain retailers would have a HTIB that would meet your budget, and have everything you need for true surround sound. it of course would not be the highest quality, but it would suit your needs. you should even be able to stay with known name bands, ie sony, jvc, pioneer, yamaha. Pricing on all these systems start at under $200.

I spent $175 on mine from Wal-mart almost 4 years ago and I have loved every minute of it. I still go into Wal-mart and Best Buy and nothing sounds even close to how awesome my system sounds. Phillips rocks.

Onkyo makes a great product. They have great box sets as well. As one other person mentioned, Circuit City has them for your price range. Good luck. He will love it.

Look to "HTIB" brands such as JVC or Yamaha in your price range. You can do a product comparison search on one of these search engines and similar websites...
