Hi, I want to get my house painted and I have heard that the colors which we use to paint our house interiors have their effect on our moods. Is it true. Is there any color strategy to be followed while painting our house. How about using different colors for different rooms. Can you tell me what are the colors which have good and bad effects on our moods. Where can I get more information on this topic.

It is true that colors can have an effect on your mood. It really depends on a number of things. How sensitive you are to external stimulus being a large portion of it. Lighter colors tend to have a positive effect on mood. This is partly because of the amount of light reflected back from them. The more light you are exposed to, the more your body breaks down the "depressed" hormones and the more it generates "happy" hormones.

Colors that you like have a similar effect, but on a less chemical and more perceptual level. If you like how your home looks, then you will feel happier. This is, of course, subjective. The same colors I like may not be the same colors you like.

Different colors for different rooms could help you in a number of ways. Darker colors in the bedroom could create a more comfortable, sleepy environment, while brighter colors in the kitchen and living rooms could help you to feel more energized and happy in the rooms you spend most of your home-life within.

Neutral colors do wonders for any room you are having difficulty deciding on. This is because they tend to have a medium to high "brightness" and also tend to match with most items you place within the room. This works both on the chemical level and the perceptual level.

You could look up Feng Shui. Some people consider it hokey, but the stuff in there can really help an environment come together for the purpose you desire.

Hope that helps.

Sorry, I forgot to add that there are cultural differences as well. For example, Someone mentioned that red can invoke aggression in inmates. That is probably because the inmates are under a great deal of stress and are prone to such behavior. Therefore, the cultural difference can cause different reactions. Another example, White here just seems a little sterile, but mixed with other colors tends to look nice to many people. In Chinese culture, white is a funeral color. Depending on your culture, your perceptual relationship to colors could also be altered.

Green has a very calming effect, as does light blue. I like to go for red in the kitchen as it helps to awaken me. There are so many shades of these colors out there. The possibilities are endless.

Color can affect your mood-think about the weather when it's sunny and bright out you feel happier and when it's rainy dark and gloomy for awhile you start feeling kind of tired ans sleepy a lot. Just use that as a guide.

Purple haze, purple rage reflects mixed emotions of intense anger, with fear and deep mental confusion.
Opposite to purple in our psychological effects of color is the happy YELLOW.
Warming further from yellow is the rich, nutritious ORANGE used also for Buddhist monks' robes. Warm, reliable, radiant, full of goodness.
BLUE reflects the limitless, rich and bountiful infinity of oceans - deeper blues evoke trust and future wealth and optimism.
