Something preferrably with a temperature control, cover, basket, and smaller oil capacity of about 4-6 cups. Not one of those fry babies, something a little more modern.

Rival Cool Touch Deep Fryer CF275
Capacity: 2.5 liters
Price: $49.99
Comments: In the crucial frozen french fry test, this model maintained heat as well as the “professional” fryers. The only model with a window in the lid that did not steam over and become useless. Because the built-in timer will turn off the heat when the set time expires, we recommend using the “stay on” setting and relying on a separate timer.

Go to a flea market and buy a used cast iron stock pot.
Go to the store and buy a thermometer and some cooking oil.
Put the oil in the pot and set the thermometer in the oil. Turn on the fire. When the temp gets to about 350 you can cook.
All that will cost you about 30$.
If you want "something modern" it'll cost at least $100.

I am not sure. You should be able to find one at Wal-Mart ;-) They're good for that sort of thing.

Disclaimer: any initial savings on the deep fryer will surely be offset by higher medical costs down the road.
