For the last 7 years, I have had this ball of mucus sitting in my sinuses which cause me a headache and virtually no ability to breathe through my nose.

It is worst in the winter and during rainy weather.

Due to the congestion I breathe through my mouth when sleeping, which wakes me up several times each night, which results in me never getting a good night's sleep.

When I use nasal sprays, even Nasonex, my problem is lessened (although it is still there). When the medicine wears off, the problem is twice as worse, resulting in a severely runny nose, sinus headache and *totally* congested nasal passages.

I am at my wit's end and feel like I should take a drill and put a hole in my head and stick a tube into the offending sinus cavity and suck the damn mucus out. Obviously, I am exagerating, but it is making me lose my mind.

What can I do?

I don't have pets, I don't smoke and taking a hot shower/bath does nothing. This exists year-round and I live in a temperate climate.

You need to be seen by an ENT (Ear, Nose, Throat doc) also called an Otolarygologist (don't ask me why they don't all call themselves "Otorhinolaryngologists" because it would be more accurate) :)

Anyway.. it sounds like you've either got an occult sinus infection (just a constant sinus infection that continues to cause drainage and stuffiness, low level, not enough to cause a fever, but enough to make you crazy!) which would require antibiotics....

Or allergies, so what you really need is antihistamines and Flonase - although the "after" symptoms you describe sound like you're using too much of the wrong type of nasal spray and then the problem is getting worse from that. What a vicious cycle!

If Nasonex lessens the problem, then you have swelling in your sinus passages. This just leads me to believe this is caused by either allergy or infection. I'd try a visit to that ENT. If it's not allergy or infection... and not resolved by use of antihistamines and/or antibiotics, then they could tell you, by use of X-ray, if you have an area in your sinuses that might be abnormally developed and you could benefit from sinus surgery. It's not pretty... and it's painful... and you've got a decent recovery time from it... but it can be a positive and life-changing procedure and if that's the solution for you, it sounds like you've gotten to that stage.

Good luck to you. I hope it's something fairly simple that's just been overlooked and it will resolve quickly!

Sounds like a case of bad intestinal bacteria, need dietary changes, lots of greens, no red meat , sugar or milk. Lots of pre and probiotics, and Hydrocolon therapy, it helped me after years of suffering with sinus congestion and headaches every day for about ten years. After the second hydrocolon therapy, my sinuses cleared and I only have congestion in the AM and PM now.

First off using Nasonex or other similar medicines will only make things worse. Personally before you go completely insane see a ear and nose doctor.

I would go to a ear, nose, and throat doctor, and explain the problem...They do surgeries for that kind of thing...That surgery will be permanent, but it could happen again...Just so's you know...Allergies are a funny thing...They are permanent, unless you live in a bubble...

I had an operation to correct a deviated septum. It helped. My allergies didn't go away, but it opened up my nasal passages. Any ENT doctor should be able to advise you. Good luck!
