This is like asking if the company that you work for will sack you as you do not believe that the company doesn't exist and that you do bother to show up. That is, a curious paradox.
Might I offer an alternative perspective? Does being an atheist hurt God's feelings? After all, I might be annoyed that someone didn't believe in my existence. Maybe I would then choose to ignore them for their disbelief, adding fuel to their denial. Of course, they would have no evidence that I even exist except for a bunch of words that are typed out that might easily be a robot programme composing them. However, if I come knocking on their door, what will I do then?
I guess that you are simply choose to error on the side that God does not exist as that might be the best way that you cope with life. If it turns out that God does exist, we really have no way of telling if He will just give you a big surprise or hurl lighting bolts at you. But then, maybe it won't matter as God would have enough self-esteem to not care at all.

No. If you an atheist then there is no one to punish you. If you believe in god then you not really an atheist.
I believe that there is no punishing god what so ever. Each individual well and is already punishing themselves to many different degrees for their beliefs.

I thought you were an atheist and you didn't believe in God. But now that you ask if God will punish you, then you accept him and you're not an atheist anymore, so he cant punish you as an atheist.

No, if that's the only reason he probably won't (hey imagine all the people belonging to other religions and those that don't even know the concept, if God is indeed merciful he won't punish them just because of that). I'm of course answering this question with the premise that God exists.

No - if you lead a "good" life.
Yes - if you lead a "bad" life.
The choice of how GOD will "treat" you - is for you to deside.
Being an atheist has nothing to do with being punished or rewarded. Treating the people good or bad when you were alive does. Sorry.

As an atheist why do you even bother being worried about punishment from an entity you do not believe exists.

God punishes anyone who is not washed clean in the blood of Jesus.(has trusted in Jesus and what he did for them and so been forgiven) because they have not accepted is gift of love and chance to escape the punishment they deserve. the bible says Jesus took the sins of the whole world on his shoulders and that includes yours. the only thing that prevents you from benefiting from this is refusing to believe and act on it. God is a loving god which is why Jesus died and rose again however he is a righteous god and connot stand sin which is also why he sent Jesus.

Unfortunately the answer is yes.
If you ask this question then I don't believe that you are really an atheist or else this wouldn't even come to mind.
The fact that you know God exists is enough for you to be punished if you don't turn to Him and live your life in His image.
All you have to do is accept Jesus Christ as your one and only savior. Just pray, ernestly, the sinners prayer. Admit you are a sinner, you always have been and to some degree you always will be. Accept the fact that Jesus Christ is a living God in heaven and because of Him we can live in heaven with Him after we die. Accept Jesus as being the only way to heaven, that you have to and will live a life dedicated to him.
Good luck to you and Ill pray that you continue to ask this type of question because if you do then I know that there is a chance for you.

The punishment is not for being an atheist. We are all sinners. The wages of sin is death, the second death (separation from God) Some of us have been Chosen for salvation. faith cometh by hearing the word of God. Receiving the sacrifice of the Christ. As he has said , I pray for the world, not the whole world , but those that thou hath given me I shall not lose one.
It's like this , you're a drowning person who has been tossed a life line. Are you being punished for not believing in the life boat?
