Miniature schnauzers are wire haired dogs - you're not going to get a silky coat like an afghan or maltese have no matter what you do. What you could try when you bath him (and don't bath him too often - really bad for his skin) is put a little Calgon water softener in the bath tub and get him to lay down in it for a few minutes. That softens the hair.

Your breed of do is suppose to have wirery hair type texture.
Coat
Tight, hard, wiry and as thick as possible, composed of a soft, close undercoat and a harsh outer coat which, when seen against the grain, stands up off the back, lying neither smooth nor flat. The outer coat (body coat) is trimmed (by plucking) only to accent the body outline.
