You can't

I had a similar discussion with one of my female passengers last night, only it involved a male friend who has expressed feelings for her. They have been best Friends since diaper days, but she is not interested in him in any type of romantic way. Unfortunately, he picked being drunk to get up the nerve to approach her. I told her to sit down for coffee and have a talk with him, after he is no longer filtering what she is saying through alcohol.

For you, be open and to the point. Whether he, assuming it is a he, freaks out is a possibility, but in you path through life, this is something you will have to face from time to time. If the person is of the same sex as you, than you may need to take into consideration how the person was raised, and how they view the issues of same sex relationships.

I would not tell them you are "in love" with them. I was in this situation years ago and it ended up being a disaster. However, we ended up friends in the end. He was really freaked and I felt I couldn't go back to the way it was before.

It would be better to ask him/her if he would ever consider going out with a friend. See what his reactions are. He might already know you like him and have just decided to leave it at that.

Talk theoretically at first. then after you get a good idea of his feelings venture a bit further.

I don't think you should be open and have a serious conversation if you dont' want to freak them out. Drop a hint, drop a few hints, drop a few hints more... if it's not taking you anywhere you can always say you were joking, as "a friend would always understand". It you tell them straight, and they are no interested, you might loose the friend as well. Good luck.

If he is your best friend than you should be able to anticipate his reaction. Never miss an opportunity. Do you want to go through life saying "I should have told him?" A true friend would understand if you needed to express yourself openly. That's what friends are for, right? Do what you feel is best for yourself no matter what answers you find here because it's you that has to live with this decision.

Are you sure you're in love with them? I don't want to sound patronising but you definately need to be sure, otherwise you will risk ruining the relationship.

ifu value your friendship I wouldn't but as time goes on you could make it known that he /she is more to u than a best friend. But u will have to tread lightly or u could end up with breaking up the best friendship u have.

Friendship to lover rarely works out. If you feel they will truly freakout out then i suggest you dont tell them.

if you really love that person, tell him/her. If he/she stops talking to you or freak out, then it most likely not meant to be.
