In matters of faith.
To me it seems they cannot be right since the truth cannot be selfcontradictory.

Of course truth has everything to do with faith. You do not belive a thing unless you think it's true.

to edward, Well, I agree with the statement but who'll decide where the line goes between essentials and nonessentials?

Catholics have one set of doctrines, so all Catholics more or less believe the same thing.

Protestants, on the other hand, believe in the priesthood of every believer, meaning that they don't believe in having one person (the pope) tell them what to believe, but believe that each and every person can be a pope and decide what to believe. This is why there are close to 3000 different protestant religions, each one having its own ideas as to faith and doctrine...Faith has nothing to do with truth, so self-contradiction (which, by the way, applies only in one kind of logic, a logic of two values) has nothing to do with the matter.

Cuz we are weak and lazy and led astray by many a false teacher who turn us against one another thus separating us each to his own lie. As a group we do not read our Bibles. We say we do but if it were true we would be in one accord and our witness would be powerful but alas we like getting our ears tickled. Our teachers have told us they are the shepard and we the sheep, and what sheep tells it's shepard this or that. Here's the bottom line the Bible sets out rules for choosing elders and we do not follow them (some do as some are not lazy and read their Bibles) We choose people who should never be allowed in the pulpit who preach division when there is clearly suposed to unity and be of one accord. There are rules of accountability for elders, more stringent but good rules just the same. If we followed the rules of accountability Bush would have been excomunicated or changed his ways early on. Aggression is not tolerable for followers of Jesus.

There is always the human factor we have to contend with. If contradition was the litmus test for validity, then nothing would be right. Even particle physics show self contradictions in the particle and wave nature of light.

Question. If the truth is "Selfcontradictory", then why would a Protestant have to be involved?

They are at different levels of growth. They have the '2 or more witnesses' principle (Matt. 18:16, 2 Cor. 13:1) available to them; but the application of it varies. If more fully applied, along with 2 Tim. 3:16-17, one would see that the scriptural old testament is the law of Moses, not Genesis-Malachi. (For a 'partial' list of the scriptural 'witness' one can email me at their convenience).

Protestants are of many stripes and colors. We are, sadly, not one body. You are right that truth is not selfcontradictory. If we were of one body, we would speak the same thing. Try this. In the essentials, unity, in the non- essentials freedom, and in all things love.

Because there is a diversity of minds (as there is diversity of colors, heights, weights, etc.) in human beings. We also were given free will and choice by God. Different people see things different ways. Which is good. Otherwise we would all be the same, and then all but one person would be unnecessary!

They all want their particular brand to be right and everyone else to be wrong. They are so focused on the differences that they seem to miss the similarities.

Makes you wonder how they expect to convince others that this is the truth if they can't even agree among themselves.

Not all Protestants will agree on everything. This does't change the Truths they do agree on: God is Jesus, died for sins and God raised Jesus from the dead on the third day.

Man-made religion...false religion...follow false doctrines. They are not on one accord (Pure Bible Teaching). All religious sects are man-made and follow doctrines of men. Jesus, in the book of Matthew, denounced the Scribes and Pharisees for that very thing. And He warned against sects and divisions. (These religions are not the "True Church" that Jesus founded when on earth.)

It is a matter of faith, it is like saying 'WHY DO ALL CATHOLICS feel GUILT RIDDEN' when clearly not all do, we can generalise but the answer is a matter of faith. regards lf
