I suggest you narrow your search not by others opinions but instead determine your likes and dislikes first and go from there.. Cost might be a factor to consider as some breeds are very expensive. If you have kids you also may not want to get one that is too small as they can be fragile and easily injured.. The amount of grooming required is also a consideration.. Decide if you want one that bounces around with unlimited energy or would you prefer a cuddle bug? Make a list of what you hope your new companion will be like and then search for him or her.. Don't forget to consider a cross bred dog and be sure to check out the pets at your local shelter.. You can often find purebred dogs and cats there! Don't forget you will be responsible this little guy for the rest of his life, so be sure you will be able to care for him for the next 12 to 16 yrs,, Never treat a pet as if they are disposable! Good luck!!

Hi there:
Wow, house dog under 20 lbs? Well, that one is easy, what is not so easy is which one is best. All dogs are best when the match up is the right one. What I can offer you as an answer is to simply ask yourself some life style questions and based on the answers you give yourself then choose the breed suited to you. You will never be disappointed nor will your new pet either.
For example; if you need a house dog that is always by your side or only sometimes by your side choose a breed that was specifically bred for those qualities.
Breeds like poodles are smart, loving, do not shed, are non allergic for people who have allergy's, but more importantly I highly recommend that you contact your local ASPCA and ask them for guidance. If not them then contact rescue groups through the web or your phone directory. You will learn SOOOooo much from them as to what breed or mix breed will be best for your needs. I am positive you will find your new bestest for ever friend from one of those organizations. :)

Honestly a mutt. Go to the pound and be sure to take a pup outside or wherever their 'family testing area' is...play with the dog. Take a ball or such with you. Then, you get a full grown dog and will know what it's real personality is!

Otherwise, I always vote yorkie. Not the teacup overbred thing but a normal sized york. They will follow you everywhere, sit in your lap, play fetch, etc. etc. But they DO run after cars/bikes etc so if the yard is not fenced in, fence it.

Labs are super, but get to almost 100 pounds.

Whatever you do...kennel train. It's the most effective. Read my old posts on it, I promise it will help! And remember, the smaller the dog the harder to housebreak. :)

I think a Scottie dog is a good choice! I have two they are small compact and very strong and loyal.... Also there bark is very fierce if someone was @ your door trying to get in they w/have no idea that there was a Scottie in the house they w/think it was a German Shepard or husky or large dog.

I think another good choice would be a Cairn terrier (Toto dog) because they don't shed and there isn't much upkeep with their fur. They are very sweet and loyal dogs too.
