My husband is from the former Yugoslavia. Before we got married, he had one request of me that he said would mean a lot to him - to wear the ring on my right hand, which is their tradition. He is Rusyn (Ruthenian). Well, the man never asked much of me, so I did, and for 17 years I have enjoyed doing so. We got married in a Ukrainian Catholic ceremony. Since we've been married, we have more of his family and other people from Yugoslavia come to Canada, and they all wear their rings on the right hand. Interestingly, my mom (we are Ukrainian) told me that when she got married, the ring was put on her right hand - but that she later switched it to the left, and always wore it there. So, it's been interesting doing this, since I wear my wedding band, my engagement ring and 10 year anniversary ring together on my right hand, and sometimes a dress ring on my left. So sometimes people think I'm married, others think I'm divorced, etc.. I answer politely if they ask.

I am southern european and my family wears their wedding rings on their right hand. I know that Greeks do the same, so I can only assume that so do the Greeks in Cyprus. And you are correct, many European countries do this. I asked the priest in my church and the reasons he gave me are as follows: Under tradtion and as it concerns the church, your right hand is considered to be the 'holy' and 'pure' hand. Jesus sits at the right hand of God...etc, etc. He also said that in the United States, up until the industrial revolutions, everyone wore their rings on their right hands. During and after the industrial revolution, people moved the rings from their right hand to their left because, after all, most people are right handed and to lose a finger off of your right hand due to a machine accident would be far worse than doing the same to the left hand. Hope that helped some.

I'm from Serbia, and yes, we wear wedding rings on the right hand.
don't know why it has always been that way, I guess that it has it root in our orthodox church.
There is a custom to move your ring to the left hand when you get divorced or widowed but it is very rare (at least in my country). People just keep wearing them on the right or do not wear them at all.

I must say I've never heard of this, I've been told the ring would go on the left hand. Just another american tradition I guess.

They do that in Holland, Sweden, Finland and Norway. It was changed by the protestant churches to distinguish themselves from the catholics.
