I am a Pagan myself; Apache Traditionalist & Eclectic Euro-Based Paganism, with strong Druidic leanings: what do you expect from a "Breed?" :)
I think this would be an interesting question to put to Carol Sagan as he was an Atheist yet remarkably spiritual and enlightened.
I myself don't believe anything can exist without some type of mater to produce it. This includes our thoughts, emotions, and consciousness itself. In spite of our advancements I believe that our technology is too primitive to rationally decided on this mater by science, just yet. I mean we still haven't unlocked all the secrets of DNA yet, much less things like the the gravitron. This of course is speaking from the theory that consciousness is created by elements more minute then the chemicals that appear to create them.
However, I think that the issue of rather or not these NDEs are hallucination hold no bearing on rather or not there is an afterlife. Logically if our thoughts/consciousness/soul are energy, independent of the body, then science has already taught us that energy dose not cease to exist but only changes form. So to me, in theory, this indicates that an afterlife is very likely in logical terms. Do' I believe this is absolutely true? Yes. I wont even go into EVPs as that is too questionable of a science at this time.

No, I don't believe there is such a thing as an afterlife. When you think about it, religion and the idea of an afterlife was invented many centuries ago... why? Because it was the only way man could explain our existance and the world around us. They did not know, what we all know now. They didn't know what was out there, stars, moons, disease, other people etc. So they had to try and come up with a reason for being. I would love to think that there is a better place we go when we die, but there isn't. We just have to accept that we go into the ground and become food for the next lot of evolving creatures!

Yes, I believe there is an afterlife, but that is for personal reasons. I don't have a problem with the idea that the NDE is the result of anoxia affecting the brain, but I also believe that any phenomenon that can be understood in scientific terms can also be understood within a framework of belief, that it is up to the individual to choose how they regard the world around them; whether scientifically, or in the light of their beliefs.
Is God really our creator? I would say "yes, but he hid the evidence thoroughly".

I am a Christian and i believe that NDE visions are caused by hallucination.
Some people have reportedly seen leprechauns etc. Don't be fooled, when you die, you goto the grave and rest or sleep. Research the Bible on this. When Christ comes the second time he will raise everyone from the dead. The righteous will spend eternity in heaven with Jesus, the wicked will be destroyed forever.
Take alook at this Bible study and look at the scriptures. Many Televangelists today don't believe in this, going to Heaven straight away is greek mythology which was adopted by the Catholic Church. It is entirely unbiblical.
God Bless!!

I believe in the afterlife, and a next life. When times are bad, I often wonder what I did in my last life to warrant this to happen. Every thing in life is a lesson. What you get out of it, is up to you. I know you wanted an atheist, that I am not. But I am now in a time in my life, where I am questioning and researching this very subject. I have always believed in it, ever since I was little.

while my step-father lied on the hospital bed, having an heart attack(its a hobbie of his, he has had like eleven of them or so) at one point while he was flat-lining the doctors were talking about giving up on him. he heard every bit of this and proceeded to screaming for help, which no one heard him because he was technically dead. he didnt have any "hallucinations" , no light at the end of the tunnel, no thing but starring at the doctors and trying to scream for help. then they shocked him once more and he came back to life.
i wouldnt compare life to a light bulb in the sence of you are alive or dead but more like an car engine that wont shut down. even tho the key is off the car still wants to run, and as soon as you turn the key back to the on position with out hitting the starter the car comes back to life.
i wouldnt say there is an afterlife when you die, i would rather beleive in reincarnation. and if this is so, when i come back i hope i get to be any animal with a tail, because tails are cool.

I dont claim to know the truth, but dont believe there's life after dath.even those who have had the NDE have all said(as far as i'v heard) that they here a voice calling them/speaking to them, telling them to go back and that it's not time yet for them to die. many ppl say they saw their life as they lived till date. personally i have never heard about any such experiences that there were doing something (may be talking or met) during that phase.
all these experiences sound like a dream.
but, then again who knows the truth?

1. When divers swim too deeply they sometimes have hallucinations due to a lack of oxygen reaching their brains. If nonsense like "NDE" had any veracity (it doesn't), this would be it.
2. You're either dead or you aren't. There is no such thing as "near death", just as a light isn't "nearly off".
3. Anyone intelligent doesn't lend any credence to "NDE" crap any more than they do to astrology.

i am a christian but i did watch a documentary on NDE about 6 mths ago. everyone who on the show renact their experience. some go to very cold, dark place. some went a red hot humid place & some go into these swirling light & then a place with bright light. they met loved one & after awhile wanted to stay. 1 blind lady who has NDE can see her on body laying on the surgery bed. she went up the place of light, but an late uncle of her guide her back to her body. she now believe in afterlife & happy to await the day coz she can see. food for thought stuff, draw your own conclusion.

Research on NDEs so far have not provided positive evdence that this phenomenon exists. So far we only have anectodal evidence which only indicates that there is a belief that it exists.
As far as the concept of "afterlife" goes, I could swear I have gotten messages from my dead father-in law on two occasions. So, yes, I accept the possibility of afterlife.
