In England, private schools are called public, as they were the very schools to exist and were therfore solely funded by the public. State schools - mainstream schools - are now funded by the government. Private/public schools are funded solely by the public directly and not the government. State schools are funded by the government indirectly

There's a bit of usage confusion here between the UK and USA. In the UK Public Schools are Private Schools:)

They are called 'public' because in the old days a lot of rich children would be taught at home by a tutor or governess. By being sent to a school such as Eton or Harrow they were considered to be educated in public. Hence 'Public School'.

You Amercian fellas are getting muddled up. In Britain what you call a Private School is called a Public School. What you call a Public School is called a State School.

The questioner is asking about such places as Eton, in England. It is a very elite "Public" School, i.e. you have to pay shedloads of cash to get in.

Sorry, I don't know why they're called "Public" schools when they ain't, just trying to clarify something for our American cousins.

They used to be free for the public decades ago. But now, the name 'public' remains even though they are hardly public. It is something more to do with tradition.

actually most if it is based on the tax income of the surrounding areas which can make a school harder to get into here for example if you went to a school in cary nc its a rich white boy school compared to durham nc which is the opposite. some places\schools just do it for money or tax brakes
